When you lose engine power it's max glide speed and look for a place to land.

Correct. His plane does (well did) not have a great glide ratio. I think he made the turn but never could get back to the airport.

If this happened in my Cessna I might have been able to make it back to the runway.

Takeoffs are the most likely time for an engine failure.
