Depending on the cause of cholesterol, it can be controlled and significantly lowered with lifestyle changes. Not so much if the cause is genetic.
As others have indicated, carriers underwrite differently. A std rate with one might be preferred with another carrier with the same numbers.
It would help for you to know his numbers from 4 yrs ago as well as what they are now as well as his meds (if any). Take those figures and meds and bounce it off a good life

"Hoping that" his numbers are better. That indicates he is not under treatment. Most folks on chol meds get it checked regularly. If he doesn't know his readings he is probably not a good prospect. You are just doing trial and error.
