Why does the site/my computer find it necessary to underline certain words made up of letters such as USA or MA etc?

I did a complete restore on my puter not so long ago and also switched to Firefox so many of my settings have changed. But there have been changes to the site too so I am not sure wherein lies the problem.

How do I get rid of that little annoyance?

It is in the HTML.

If you disable javascrpt in your browser you can probably get rid of the mouse roll-over event but lots of other stuff wouldn't work either.

Actually Al, this is a feature for SEO, as it adds relevant keywords inside the text and makes the content easier to understand for casual visitors who are not aware of all the acronyms.

They're not controlled by javascript. There is a simple CSS property which controls the display of these acronyms.
