Had a brain cramp, as I am in the process of going independant. Does one need the AHIP certification to sell Med Supp's? Or does it just apply to Medicare Advantage and PDP programs.

You do not need AHIP training for Medicare Supps., just MA and PDP's.

The AHIP certification isn't a bad thing.. particularly when an Omaha carrier will spring for the testing fee. After you see the way MA agents are being regulated I suspect there will be a lot of guys pushing med sups. I did the certification thing with AHIP, AARP, Coventry and Humana primarily for the product knowledge. It pays to know who the players are and what their game is about.

You don't need AHIP for Med Supp's but if you are adding in a Part D for drug coverage you will most likely (not ALL carriers use AHIP) have to do AHIP to become certified to sell a stand alone Part D with it.
