The scenario you describe is exactly what is going on right now in the Russian markets (stocks as well as bonds) - we Americans are so completely financially uneducated, we have that dumb "it can't happen here" mentality. Guess what? It is happening.
That is true but the main problem in Russia is they arent as regulated or as orderly as ours. The specialists will mediate the excess buying and selling in this country and there are trading curbs set that close markets to prevent a crash.
Also many of the russian stocks are highly speculative much like our OTC market but unlike our market these make up a significant portion of their stock offerings
And there is always the fact that russia is run by a bunch of gamblers and gangsters. i guess one could make that argument here as well LOL
