Yes, the insurance business { on the career side} is basically set up where you can make about the same at all companies as a newbie. If you were to go interview at Mutual of Omaha career shop, Physicians Mutual, Bankers, etc. you would find that they are all setting you up to make about 36K to 50K a year as a newbie. { if you sell a lot and don't lapse a bunch} Only the real good top dogs make 100K or more. And that's usually after they have been doing it a while. The majority of folks average 30K to 50K { maybe up to 70K} for the first few years. The 80/20 rule applies, where 20% of the people make 80% of the big bucks. If you want a good career and a decent pay structure and some good bonuses and good training, the career side is good, but to be a millionaire at this-is a stretch. It is probably like that in the car business. You can probably figure out how to make 50K a year selling cars, but very few bust 100K year in and year out consistently for 10 years straight. It takes a special person to bust the 100K mark year in and year out. Sales careers present the best opportunities for it- but to have the work ethic and drive to do it year in and year out- it takes a special kind of person. So, as a newbie, you are basically set up to have a decent living so you will not get discouraged.

I would like to thank everyone who replied to this post. Your input helped me with my decision. I have accepted an offer to join American General, basically because the pay plan seems more aggressive than anybody else I talked to and the over all support seems better. For example they provide leads for me the first year I'm there. They do charge a fee but it's only $6.00 a week and I get 250 leads a month. So thanks again. I'm glad I found this forum.

That's a fair amount of leads for $6/wk... good luck! You only have to sell $50/mo per week in term insurance to meet your goals (based on what you posted earlier)... sounds like a piece of cake to me!

I talked to an office yesterday (AGLA) and they were saying the training pay is actually a draw off of future commission. Now I am confused.

American General is a joke. Everybody that walks through the door gets hired even now in the middle of a recession. That alone tells you to run for your life. From what I hear American General is working the want ads on Craigs list big time. Any employer using craigs list to recruit is a tight ass did I say that yet. I also hear that American General is working monster.com real hard. Lesson 1 in job hunting is that good employers dont have to advertise to find applicants. The applicants find them .

I am being told the weekly training salary is a draw off of my future commissions again today. This is in conflict with what I am reading here. Also they want me to pay $200 for their training, which I believe they said I would get reimbursed. What am I missing?

OK, thanks. Then what is a better choice? A different l&H company or go P&c for now due to the economy?

Re: American General Interview Today             Go to Top

I don't know much about American National other than I usually steal their customers. Their rates are ridiculous. i had one lady tell me she was quoted $79 a month for $3000, that I was able to do for $32??? I don't know if she was right, but I often can offer a much better rate. However, I know guys that have been selling for them for like 30 years and they seem to make good money and like their job. Their is definately an upside to selling for a company with such a big presence ... do they really give you 250 leads a month???? That is an insane amount of leads ... I'd be curious if Bozack23 is still doing this??
