One company basically controls everything. Also, in many cases free speech doesn't apply to the food industry. It's against the law in many states to make any negative statement about a food product. Ask Oprah about it when the beef association sued her.
You are correct there isn't a free market in agriculture, the scariest thing about our current ag market is that most regions of the US only have a 3 day supply of food. If something happened that kept the trucks or trains moving for 3 or more days, we would run out of food. Here in Missouri pre WWI each county produced enough food to feed everyone in the county, pre WWII, as a whole the state produced enough food to feed it's residents, it has dropped to a point that not one county in the state produces enough food to feed themselves
Everyone needs to do their homework. It's no accident that "crap and junk" is extremely cheap...but go load up on fresh vegetables and see how much it costs.
How is it possible to get a double cheeseburger for $1 yet string beans yesterday at our grocery store were $3.99/pd.
Picked up asparagus to grill last night at $3.99 lb at the local owned market.
Has anyone else noticed that at the chain markets and Walmart the "fresh" produce is so bad that 20 yrs ago we would have thrown it out when it got to that stage.
