If a Friend Drives my Car, Does my Liability Insurance Cover It?

I NEVER let my friends drive my car and they always think I worry too much.

However, my reason is that they are not covered when they drive my car.
(they don't own cars because they live in Manhattan) If they get into
accidents, my liability insurance will not cover them. If they drive into a
fence, the comprehensive coverage will not pay to fix the bumper.

Am I wrong?

I don't know about New York. They have some whacky laws.

But in almost any other state you would be wrong. Insurance always follows the vehicle, not the driver. Thus if you loan the vehicle to a friend, your policy covers them under permissive use.

and by the way, if they drove the vehicle into a fence, comprehensive coverage wouldn't apply. you would need to have collision coverage for that to be covered.

Having worked in Manhatten for a while, I wouldn't let anyone drive my car there either. Its amazing there aren't more accidents in that city!!!!

If you got insurance thru an agent and not a 1-800 kiss my ass company, you could get these questions answered....

I have GEICO and they don't have a live agent that I can speak to face to face.

Almost all of their agents that I speak always end up telling me "this is just
hypothetical and it will be determined when you file an actual claim...."

perhaps I should switch to State Farm(or is it Allstate) that has local agents
even in little towns? :(

can't say that I blame you with a name as silly as Liberty Videocon. :D:

sounds like a third rate auto insurance company that you would expect to see in India.

I've never heard of Liberty Videocon either, and my agency works with pretty much every company under the sun.

Turns out it's a joint-venture between Liberty Mutual and and Videocon Industries Ltd., which just so happens to be an Indian company, haha

As long as the person who you loan your vehicle to has your permission, a valid driver's license and is authorized by law to drive and doesn't violate your policy conditions (ie drive drunk) then your policy would cover them.
