Basic Getting Set-up Questions             Go to Top

I'm new to insurance and going to give it a try as an independant and trying to get set-up. Probably will focus on senior market but would like to have some individual health availabilty to me in case I stumble upon something.

Since its not at all any focus about how many carriers need I represent to give myself reasonable opportunity to compete. Or is it not about how many but instead having different situations covered --ie med conditions--with who i assemble. Is there really any advantage to having multiple choices if they dont distinguish themself from the others in any way to better cover different niches? Are some priced better for smokers ---are some covering conditions others dont.

I sort of fell into Coventry and also Assurant ---what would be good to complement or a better "go to" than either of these

Also being new I dont know the norm----Coventry is a 15% i understand which someone local told me is good but I'm seeing lots of 20%s spoken about here. What is the norm?

One last question---for someone who is not going to focus on health, is individual or small group the way to go when I want to veer from senior product occationally

Thanks for the input as I try to get setup

My individual book in Georgia is handled by Humana, Assurant, Golden Rule, and Aetna. I don't really think there's much need for Coventry - I've never known anyone to be truly happy with them here.

Each one has their own underwriting quirks. With that combination, I find it very unusual to run across a case that I can't adequately handle.

What part of Georgia are you in? Give me a call if you like, I'm in the Marietta area and would be happy to spend some time on the phone with you.

There is no "norm". Each carrier set's their own schedule.

If you are just looking for the highest commission there are carriers offering 24%. Chasing commissions and advances is a good way to flame out in a few months.
