Covered California Individual Health Plans Announced

The Covered California Benefit Exchange hosted a press conference today, during which it announced the selected participants for the new Covered California individual health insurance marketplace.

Thirteen plans will be made available in 19 rating regions statewide - to the 5.3 million Californians who can purchase insurance through Covered California. Many may qualify for federal subsidies to help pay for their monthly insurance premiums.

The health plan participants in the individual Covered California marketplace include:

Alameda Alliance for Health
Anthem Blue Cross
Blue Shield of California
Chinese Community Health Plan
Contra Costa Health Services
Health Net
Kaiser Permanente
L.A. Care Health Plan
Molina Healthcare
Sharp Health Plan
Valley Health Plan
Ventura County Health Care Plan
Western Health Advantage

I have not heard of some of the above plans. Does anyone know which of these plans are geared toward the Medi-Cal eligible population?

Heard something on the radio earlier today with a comment that Cigna, Aetna and UHC would not participate in the . . . marketplace. Also that Blues and KP have something like 85% of the market.

Not only the public, but the people who run these exchanges think that if the individual family plan premiums are close to what a group plan charges, it's a good thing.

Here's a guy in charge of a California Consumer Advocacy group who is pleased with the state's exchange premiums...

"“Health insurance isn’t cheap but this seems to provide individuals and families the group rate that large employers get,” said Anthony Wright, the executive director of Health Access California, a state consumer advocacy coalition."

Obviously, Mr. Wright has never purchased his own individual health plan before. The vast majority of Americans mistakenly believe that Group plans have lower premiums. Many of my Individual Family Plan small business-owner clients wanted a small group policy until I showed them the thousands of annual dollars they'd save by insuring the 2 or 3 families individually.

No commission on people not enrolling.

That's not fair.

The govt pays farmers not to grow crops, welfare bums not to work and over 10 million on SSDI to do nothing.

Finally, a media outlet discovers what we knew the moment California released a sampling of the 2014 Exchange premiums.

"Except that Lee was making a misleading comparison. He was comparing apples—the plans that Californians buy today for themselves in a robust individual market—and oranges—the highly regulated plans that small employers purchase for their workers as a group. The difference is critical."
