It is apparent from Obama's health reform flop around circus that his leadership style is basically to make speeches, observe what Congress does, and act as a cheerleader for what looks good to the public and to distance himself fromanything specific. Thus he has no health care bill on the floor(s) and makes the rounds to the Sunday news programs (excepting Fox of course) and takes his big toothy charm to David Letterman tonight to talk to the hip folks.
Problem is: We are at war. His style is not working for health care reform (which is basically his specialty- a talky-talky issue) so heaven help the troops in the field where real leadership and strategy are required.
Which is it? Are we going in deeper or are we going to leave the troops stretched thin while Obama works out his "hearts and minds" campaign to turn Afghanistan into the Switzerland of the region.
Don't know. Just know that his leadership style is a prescription for disaster here. By this time next year, health reform will be a collection of grab-bag bills and resolutions and wait-and-see triggers reflecting where Congress was able to agree or disagree. Good luck trying to run a war that way. Kennedy is remembered as a charismatic charmer because he died early on and thus escaped the legacy of his troop build-ups and cofused policies which eventually destroyed both Johnson and Nixon.
Look for more gray hairs on President Obama's head. You gotta have sympathy for anyone in the job but on the other hand he really has ducked a whole pant-load of responsibility and leadership in some areas and he campaigned on a platform of providing it.
