Is there any chance we can get the "merged posts" thing scrapped. We didn't have it earlier and it is my understanding that most people don't like it.
From a tech standpoint (I know this stuff... see Jaya123) while it does save a little bit of disk space and a tiny amount of "seek" overhead, these days servers are fast and space is cheap.
I fail to see how the "merged posts" feature helps the readability of a thread.
Perhaps if others feel the same they will post here and the owner will consider this request.
Yea...What is a merged post?

I have heard you guys talk about it, but what is it?

Maybe one of these days, I can see for myself what it is.
I don't have any idea what you are talking about. I'm brain dead when it comes to alot of this stuff
There is no such word as "alot." It is "a lot" meaning "many" or "more than one" or "a large amount."
A merged post is when you answer one post, submit it and then go and answer another post... and they are merged. Such as here:

Reason: Posts merged
Now see, I thought the merged posts was strickly an admin support thing. Never thought about the massive amounts of diskspace it saved, or the bandwidth.....
The merged posts thing helps to reduce people running up posts for the sake of post count.

I like it!

I think we should keep it!

That is just my opinion!

All someone has to do to game this system is write "I agree" in a bunch of different threads and they get their post count up.
And WHO will be the first to post "I agree" to this post? My money is on Greensky!
(Which reminds me of the story about "silent" Calvin Coolidge. Dorothy Parker (famous columnist) met Cooldege at a White House party and said "Mr. President, I bet my editor I could get you to say more than three words."
The merged post thing has nothing to do with saving resources or disk space. It's purpose is to prevent useless bumps of threads, where there is no added value in the new post, but a "new post" is added in order to bring the thread higher.
This is something that happens quite a lot and would annoy a lot of people who now think there is a reason to review that thread. Since the posts are auto merged, you never have to see this crap.
It is an important feature and like many automated features, there are some small downsides that you just have to live with.
In another couple of days you will have 9,000 members. Whatever you are doing can't be all wrong. When I joined a couple of years ago you had around 300 members.
If you don't tell me how to design my program I won't tell you how to run your board.
I'm just grateful you started it.

Well, that may be the utility of the feature, but it is rather limited in scope or application. All this does is keep honest people honest.
There are plenty of ways to bring back a thread from the dead, correct?
I have not seen too many "bumps" on this board. Of course, your reply is "You see, it works!"
We got along without this "feature" for a long time and I assert that it causes more "discomfort" than that which it seeks to prevent.
Why not take it off for 30 days and see what happens? If things get out of hand, you can always put it back on and say to me "I told you so."
Not a big deal. I just thought it should be discussed by the readers here and see what others thought. Keep it or dump it... won't make much difference to anyone. It was just a thought.
There have been a ridiculous number of bumps over the last few weeks. I bumped the oldest thread on this forum because Rick said I would win a beer
Seriously, I have seen dozens of bumps over the last 10 days of threads that died in 2006. With little of value on the bumped comment, or a request for information from someone like James who left here years ago.

I don't think you selected the very oldest thread Dave
Here it is, I bumped the oldest thread, thread no.1
