I'm also pretty new to this whole game but if I were you I would just start making calls to the big group carriers in your area. In my area (Michigan) the big ones tend to be Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority, and HAP. Others you might look into would be Humana/Aetna/United Health Care. You could also consider asking some of the clients you plan on pursuing what carrier they currently have so that you can be appointed with them.
Another thing to consider is finding a GA
(general agency or managing general agency) in your area. They will help you get appointed with whatever carriers they represent and usually offer training on different subjects aimed at helping agents learn the business.
