Qualifying Event Coverage

A new employee is eligible for benefits on 11/1. She wants to waive coverage because she is currently under her husband's group plan. The husband's new plan goes into effective on 1/1/16. She wants to then determine which is a better program and then decide which plan she wants.

If she voluntary waives her coverage, and then voluntary drops her husband's plan, would this be considered a qualifying event?

No, it would not because it is all voluntary.

However, she should be able to get the information about her husbands plan and be able to make a decision.

Good luck.

I believe that if she drops her husband's coverage and gets a letter from the employer saying her group coverage is terminating or a letter of creditable coverage from her carrier, she will be able to get on her employer's plan off open enrollment.
