I'm trying to get some new appointments for preferred auto and home carriers. Erie wants first right of refusal on preferred business. I hear they're a good company, but I don't want to commit if I think another company would be a better fit for the customer. I'm coming from a captive agency and loathe to want to get too beholden to just one company. Hartford and Travellers aren't asking for first right of refusal, what do ya'll think?

From my experience with Erie, they are first rate in most every area. They do want to be the lead company in the agency, but they "Will" earn the business. We have several preferred carriers in our office, Erie is still our #1
As a consumer, I've never heard of them. I'm scared to death to try a company that no one has every heard of.
I rather pay more and know who the company is and know they pay claims then try a new company that no one knows about and wonder how they pay claims.
I'm talking as a consumer.

In portions of IN, PA, & OH they are well known and respect. A good P&C.
September 1st I am launching my independant agency with Erie as my go to line. The just won the JD Power award for the second year in a row, made the Wards top 50, and received A+ rating from A.M. Best. In Ohio they are competitive on personal lines and offer an HO-5 homeowners. 10/10 home, 15/15 auto and 20 commercial. If you start on a semi-exclusive basis with them they have some nice perks like increased commissions for the first three years and an interest free loan. I have not gotten any negative feedback from the agents I have spoken with but if anyone has a different opinion I'd like to hear it.
Dave, if those are your boys in the pic, send me their sizes and I'll get them some Steelers Jerseys....you don't want them getting picked on at school now do you?
It's actually worse than it looks. Mikey's favorite team is the Arizona Cardinals and my wife is a die hard Steelers fan-there was a lot of tension around the TV during the SB!
