Few things are more frustrating to me as an agent than when I try my hardest to get someone to buy the best plan and they decide to buy an overpriced low deductible policy instead.

Often I'll talk to one spouse and get him or her to see the wisdom of an HSA or some other other high deductible policy.

Unfortunately, the spouse who wasn't part of the conversation is often a better sales person than I am. I'm often told "what you said makes sense but my (husband/wife) thinks..."

They will often buy the more expensive policy and the family winds up giving money to the insurance company that should have stayed in their bank account.

Sure I make a commission, often a higher commission on the more expensive policy, but I feel like I haven't done my job when they buy an overpriced policy.

Who else is similarly frustrated? Any other sales concepts to share?

My client has had it with his group coverage. He just took on a 60% increase in premium.

I'm thinking about writing all 25 employees with an individual carrier and save the guy around $60,000 a year in premiums...... I've pre-screened the group and it's looking good except for a few with some pre-exsistings.

I'm 100% sure I'll provide better insurance then his group can.

Possible to Have RX Coverage Without Major Medical Coverage?

Ok so here's the question for you health experts....

Ok so here's the question for you health experts. Is it possible for someone to purchase a stand alone prescription coverage? And, No, I do not mean a Part D. I mean Major Medical Prescription coverage without the Major Medical.

I have a client that has a medical plan through work, but she has a 750 deductible for RX, and a 30% coinsurance after that. She only pays $35/month for Major Medical at work, (Yes, it really is Major Medical and not a discount plan - I checked) so she does not want to give it up; but she wants better prescription coverage that this plan does not provide.

Any ideas?

The client is located in NC.

Health Insurance Group Pricing Through "Association Memberships"

(Newbie post, I searched posts on the health...

(Newbie post, I searched posts on the health insurance board here and couldn't find information about the association part of these plans. Forgive me if it's been answered before)

I am from the life and annuity side of the business but wanted to write some individual health (good timing- I know) so I looked for some BGA's for health insurance. I ran into people from US Health & Health Markets and wonder why they have the client join some association that gives "group" pricing to the individual market. The reps told me how these associations are non-profits and endorse the carrier.

With the association membership, all I can see are some basic discounts, legal plans, roadside assistance and an injury rider 5K lump sum that will help if you have a high deductible for $20-40 extra a month. Also in the policy there is a separate $40 a month option that gets you a critical illness rider that can help pay for that high deductible.

The association membership doesnt pay a commission to the agent and the membership is a mandatory part of the policy.

The health product for US Health looks competitive-yet not any cheaper than the other players despite the "group" association pricing. (I didn't dig that deep into Health Markets product)

But it looks like I can go with Blue X, United, Aetna and the usual suspects here in FL. Then if you add a small critical illness and accident injury policy (gap plan?) for less that the combined 60-80 a month membership and rider costs of those groups and get paid an additional commission also? Maybe throw a prepaid legal plan for 15 a month and a AAA membership?

Also it doesn't seem like the association "group" pricing is cheaper than the usual individual plans available

Again I'm new to health insurance but have been in life and annuity for years. I don't want to disparage these companies just understand how they work vs the usual carriers and whether I need to add them to my portfolio or just know the competition.

I have been selling Avalon in Florida and have come accross some issues with this carrier.

One of my patients has seen a doctor for mild short term depression. Avalon is questioning the Dr's bill and is asking the client to fill out a pre-existing questioner.

According to my client, the Dr. Prescribed some Testosterone and Cylexa. The client claims to have taken the Cylexa but not the Testosterone. Now Avalon is questioning whether or not this client had a pre-existing condition of depression.

Is this a common practice with carriers?

What should the client do?
Your constructive input is greatly appreciated...

Risky Actions Leading to Agent Lawsuits

Just curious to hear what kinds of lawsuits...

Just curious to hear what kinds of lawsuits everyone knows which have been brought against agents, and specific actions one should beware of. I would like to include honest mistakes that inexperienced agents might make, such as submitting an app with incomplete information that would have an impact on the outcome of the app either being rejected.or approved.
Before anyone jumps on me, let me just say one of dangers I'm finding,, is once you have submitted the app electronically and you realize you have omitted information that might be material int the app's approval, not sure how to go back and modify the app, specially once emailed to the client.
From my simplistic point of view, should anything like this be uncovered by underwriting, shouldn't it just then be part of the app, after all that is a cross-check mechanism to make sure all information has been revealed. I have heard that certain companies' underwriters are on a mission to find the "cheaters", and tag future apps with skeptical eyes. I realize if the agent does this on a routine basis he deserves what he gets, but if on occasion something like this occurs, what might be the consequences?
Also, what is the best way to handle someone being rejected by a carrier and seeking to place them with a different carrier.
One of the standard questions I believe every app has is if they've been ever rejected or rated up? Obviously need to answer truthfully, but it seems then, that person is forever running the risk of being rejected and having to stick with their current insurer.

Since this is insurance-related, I thought I would post in this section.

I have a PDF file furnished by one of the major companies I work with. It is a beautiful colorful benefits summary of their HMO plans.

Unfortunately...at the bottom of the page...it states, "pleas call 1-800... for additional information." Of course...that's their direct number.

Is there a cheap program I can buy (or a free one) that allows you to edit a PDF file?

Thanks.

I'm a life agent. I've never sold individual...

I'm a life agent. I've never sold individual health insurance and have always tried to avoid it.

I have a lot of small business owner clients. I've been asked I don't know how many times about health insurance and I've always steered away from it. I've done this because I've lived with the idea that health insurance can be so frustrating, esp. to clients that I don't want my name anywhere near it.

I'm wondering if there is a BGA for individual health insurance, and possible even small groups, or if it's all done direct. Further I need someone who deals in the states of NY and VT, which looks like it might be tough.

I understand health insurance from a definition point of view and explaining what coverage is, but I'm clueless when it comes to actually selling a policy. In fact, if there is someone on these boards who specialized in health insurance who is around the Central New York area or even the capital region who'd be interested in having a conversation and might lead down to referred leads to them make yourself known.

How's it goin all? New to the board as well as the industry. I've been lurking for a while to try to get new ideas and approaches for cold calling. I've done a little here and there but now I'm ready to devote large chucks of time towards it, as I've seen recommended here several times. By taking into account all I've read, I've decided I want something quick that would have a fairly good probability of getting an opinionated response, something that could get a conversation started. I was thinking something like, "Hi, this is X from X. Can I ask you a question, what is one thing you would change about your current health plan or what don't you like about your current heath care situation, something like that. This could be something that's been covered, but I've read quite a bit and done searches on these forums and haven't come across it. What do ya think?
