They always seem to be advertising in Agent Sales Journal & Life Insurance Selling Magazines. Subscriptions to both are free.

Hi, Check out Senior Market Advisors Guide 2008. They list most of the Marketing Organizations. Online you can find the FMO by type at ProducersWEB Directory

I would think you need to describe what product or products you are wanting to market. FMOs vary somewhat in their support for various products. If I were you, I would find out from other agents in your chosen field which FMOs they find best. Also, the heirarchy rules are a little different for Life than Health, I am told. Make sure you understand them before signing anything, and NEVER sign a blank agreement, which is more than likely what you will be given 99 out of 100 times. Make sure you have the complete heirarchy named and what your rank will be.
Also, if you read this forum on a regular basis, you will find a number of us that prefer direct appointments and only use an FMO when there is no other alternative.

Think you have guts? Committment? Consider this British Light Brigade during the Crimean war, when 1/3rd of them didn't come back alive:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd & thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Exactly. I have an FMO that is great on annuties and pretty good on whole life. When I wanted to do Medicare, they couldn't help me. So, with the help of this forum, I did a bit of research on a good FMO for that business.
On the other side of the coin, when I had a big life case recently that I didn't want to run through my FMO for personal reasons, my second FMO was no help whatsover when I tried to give them that line of business. They are apparently too specialized and don't do much life. I will have to submit it though a local contact and work out a commission split or hope he will be happy with just the override.

Phil Wasserman/Philip Roy Financial, would stay away.
Freedom Tax Advisors, USA Tax Advisors, would stay away.
You're back to what do you want from an FMO

If you know with which carriers you want to work, you can call them and ask for a list of IMO/ FMO's in your area or by specialty. You can also use the Contact Us page on their website. I know it is hard to believe, but they actually will send contact requests to the closest IMO to contact you.
As has been stated already, you need to also take into consideration the products you want to sell and how much training and support you feel you need. Also, leads can be a major factor to consider.

I'll throw this out for general discussion: does it really matter that much where your FMO is located? I see this kind of question kind of frequently here: "Do you know a good FMO down the street from me?"
If a good FMO that fits you is across the country, so what? My FMO is a 9-hour drive or a short plane ride away. I'm on the phone almost daily with them and on Web conferences once a month. I see them in person for free trips and that is about all I need.
