Passed my Exam! 82%. Actually, it wasn't that hard at all. I went back to NYL and filled out all the paperwork. I hope I can make some money by December at this! (I will be splitting commissions with the agent I am under. . . and I can only work after 5 pm. I hope it works out! (Please tell me if this is realistic!)
Good job, ya done good!
I also wonder why only after 5. That may make it real tough. Successfully selling insurance is reall a full-time job.

Good luck guys, as with any situation it's going to depend on the people around you. I spent a decade with nyl and it was good and bad. I met some good people and some bad. Your success will come from your hard work. I hope in your situation your mentors have enough business of their own and aren't eyeing yours. Good luck.
What ever they do make them teach how to prospect and not just start by selling your family members.....

They are paying for my class instruction, licensing fees, and everything else that is incurred. I will come in to train a couple hours a day (at 10 bucks an hour) to learn the system and then have commission splits with the agent I am under. Maybe not as ideal as an independent agent, but, what the heck . . . the building NYL is backed up to a baseball stadium and is absolutely gorgeous. What independent agent can watch a baseball game from his office????
I have learned so much from this forum and owe much to all of you! Do y'all mind if I keep posting on this thread to let you know how things go????
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
Well . . . last night was my first appointment with my agent. He did all the talking (which was fine - because I haven't a clue what I'm doing) and it was very interesting. I have another appointment that I set up and will be doing it this Friday evening. I dont' always like hitting up church members and family, but I have informed all of them that I am practicing and learning the trade and they all agree to "humor" me and to see if they want the product.
I am excited about this but am a little confused and short-circuited by all the paper work involved. But I'm sure that comes with time.
I'll keep you posted on how things go.
(BTW, the part-time after 5pm thing is because I already have a full time Graduate Assistantship at my college and I can only do this in the evening. - it will be that way until next May.)

Damn, anyone who wants to be an insurance agent that bad has half of the battle won, the really tough half.
Okay, here's my new schedule. . . tell me what you think,Go to Top
Okay guys, Still definitely a newbie here. . . .
I go to school full time (grad level) and work 28 hrs a week. I have worked my schedule so that I have all afteroon Wednesday and Friday to prospect. I am young (24) and am slightly concerned about my young looks to sell life insurance. I have a real desire to help people and to help them make financially wise decisions. I don't have a problem cold-calling (already done some cold calling to businesses) and don't mind meeting with people in person.
Question: What do you think is the best strategy for the time I have allotted?
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
I think personally the best way to start, as a new agent myself, is to do whatever it takes to get yourself in front of people, do not push too hard on selling the insurance already, just present yourself out there, tell them what you do and what you can offer them. I am thinking of going to the library every once awhile. At least the one near where I live, have a lot of parents accompany their kids there and it doest hurt if you just go and have a bit chit-chat with them while they're waiting for the kids to get the books.
Finally done with class and now I have to take exam on Monday. I'll let you know how it goes. Lots of info to study.
- - Met some interesting people trying to get into the business. So many different backgrounds and so many different classes of people. Interesting.
I think this field attracts a lot of losers that think they can make it big their first year by sitting at home in their underwear and sipping tea. But then again, I think sales attracts those kind of people anyway.
- - Looking forward to busting my tail in this industry. Probably not until next May though. For now, I'm just interning. (Which is code for "learning and not actually producing a whole lot.") That's okay. For now, I see my license I get on Monday (providing I pass the test) as a "license-to-learn." So that when I do go full time, I will have a small book of clients I have earned over the past year and some product knowledge to go along with it!

Just my opinion, but when I am at the Library with our kids (not as often anymore)...I don't want to be talking to a stranger about health insurance.
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
Hey Kendog what city do you live at? I went through the NYL training here in Northern California a while back - I'm independent now, my manager told me that he couldn't keep hiding my health insurance sales even though I was holding up my group's numbers. Let me know where your at!
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
Hello,
I'm brand new to this wonderful forum and pretty much a brand new agent. I started with Liberty National and it was a nightmare. So, Kendog, how are things going with NYL. I'm thinking about calling them.
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
I was in the business a long time, left, and am trying to get back. I went over to NYL and got rejected. Did not make it through the first interview. They said they want career successful agents to interview, but if somebody is so successful where they are - why interview elswhere?
They told me they wanted newbies so they could train them from the beginning in the NYL way. They kind of were excited to get a guy like me who was out of the business for a while, or so they said on the phone. Rejection : fine with me, but which is it- which do they want? The newbie or the sucessful long-time agent? They are a great company, just a little bit confused in the recruiting department. Or maybe I am confused a little.
Re: Final newbie decision . . . Captive for NYL!Go to Top
NYL is a great place to start to get some experience. A friend of mine started with NYL a while ago, learned the ropes not he works with me. Selling Overpriced Whole Life and Under performing Annuities for NYL can be a roughs start if you were trying to do it on your own. The products you are going to be selling are going to pay for the training and licensing. Good Luck, keep us posted.

Hey Kendog KingEdgars! I am just about to be starting with NYL and I was just wondering how the first couple of months went for you. Did you find it difficult to keep afloat? With regards to the certifications tests did you feel that NYLICU prepared you well for it all? Thanks so much!

Thanks for your posts. As a newbie myself, it is very encouraging to read about other people's experiences going through this process and having success. I am currently trying to join American Family as a potential agent. I have a phone interview with a recruiter tomorrow. I have also been talking to Farmers but I am really hoping that American Family will give me a chance. I wish you continued success in your career. Please do post on how things go.
