My vote would be for the homeowners, as well. I'm not clear why the contractors even could CLAIM it should be theirs. It was in the home owned by the owner, not the contractors...

Wow...my home was built in 1954.....wonder if there's money inside those walls!!

But back to the story...i think in this case the owners should pay a finders fee of 10% to the contractor. He could have shut up and just shoved the bags of money into a garbage pail and walked off. He was honest.

The owners, with no previous knowledge of this money since it isn't theirs, want to keep all, but the contractor furnished the labor. The gracious thing to do is pay a %. We're seeing a little greed here too.

Say, if you found buried treasure on your property, like they do off the coastline, doesn't the gov't demand a percentage of it?( I'm not talking about the IRS.)

This may not be the law, but when I was a kid there was this saying "Finders keepers, Losers weepers."

Tou can bet your bottom dollar that the IRS is going to follow up on this story.
