Then Fox News hunts down on of the mothers who's son was killed in Normandy, sticks the microphone in her face and asks "was it worth it?" Ironic how horribly unpopular the Vietnam war was and it wa the first televised war. Everyone wants it done. No one needs to see how it's done.

Totally agree about the media and their obvious desire to create sensationlism that isn't healthy nor good for the society at large. Just love it when they attack Cheney becuase he said he didn't support Hillary for President. Wonder if they ask Hillary if she would support Cheney for President and she said no would she then be attack as a hater like they do Cheney? I seriously doubt it.

Fox News at the battle of Antetiam:
Bob: "Well it hasn't been a good day today in the latest battle of the Civil War."
Jane: "I'm viewing the live feed Bob and just can't believe it. How many dead?"
Bob: "Difficult to say Jane. Rough estimates are coming in at around 20,000. Hold on, we have a soldier here who's had his legs blown off by a canon. What's your name son?"
Soldier: "Jed."
Bob: "Wow Jed, how old are you?"
Soldier: "14."
Bob: "Well hold on Jed, we have your mom on the satellite phone. Is this Jed's mom?"
Jed's mom: "Yes, how are you doing Bob?"
Bob: "Just fine. Listen, we're here with your son who's just had his legs blown off by a canon....."
I wonder how fast that war would have ended, huh?

Absolute insanity that our government allows any media in a war zone. Free press doesn't have anything to do with war time in a war zone. I can't imagine we have footage of where our troops are and what they're doing and you can just imagine the opposition waking up every day and saying "Ok, turn on CNN so we know what's going on today." The enemy knows we're sending 20,000 more troops? Unbelievable. We've lost our minds.

Basically two things, it was our first projection of as a Naval Power that infuriated England. At that time England still consider America as a Colony that needed humoring or a pretext to that was just another straw that lead to the War of 1812. You do know July the 4th didn't start till after the War of 1812 not the Revolutionary War at least the National exceptence of it being a national day of celebration. Plus it was a pretext of the American modern day problems with Muslim Theology and expansion. Oh, not to mention it basically gave the Marines their footing as an actual working part of the military.

Interesting that you should bring that up. Back when I was in the USAF, my job had two parts 1)Videographer 2)Combat Camera Operator.
Combat camera operators are in charge of obtaining video and still imagery of various DOD projects (i..e, humanitarian, war, PR, etc.). I recently heard that the military is going to get rid of the videographer/photographer AFSC's and combine it with the Journalism AFSC (military equivalent of a reporter).
As long as you watch CNN with a grain of salt you can expect to get quality news. If you want to obtain real "military" footage contact the JCC in Washington, D.C.

I was stationed at Camp David in the Marines and I'm used to secrecy. My family didn't even know the scheduled day when I was going there. All calls from the base had to be made from a payphone and they were all monitered. When I was out in town I was not allowed to tell people where I was stationed. The theory was I could get kidnapped and tortured into giving away base secrets.
Years after I left they allowed a video special of Camp David and apparently gave them all access. Cameras showed parts of the base so secret that when I was there disclosing them would have landed me in jail. Yet, here are the cameras going through the entire area and talking about all the crap up there. Unreal how things change.

What do you mean James. Could you please explain.
Are you saying these nuts are ticked off at us because we kicked their rear end in a fight they started. I swear. Where these muslims are concerned, they could be sent back in time 1,000 years and not have any trouble adapting to life. Heck, they might be happier.

The media seems to work for the enemy and against America when it comes to the military. I'd like to think it's unintentional but after abu grahab and all of its coverage and very little coverage on the atrocities caused by the former dictator of Iraq, it makes me wonder what side they are on. I know they say its patriotic but I don't think they actually know what a patriot is.

You know, a few posts back there was a difference of opinion on the future of this country. At the time it focused on schools and education.
Before that it was about morals and every generation being decadent like Elvis with his hips. I happen to unfortunately fall in the camp that this country is fast going down the tubes. I was glad to see John Petrowski (as far as America decaying, believe me I am glad when I have people think I am wrong and that all will be well) a staunch capitalist and former Marine say he saw nothing wrong and that the next 50 years would even be better than today.
Anyway. Imagine WWII. The press never published our secrets. The people responsible would end up in jail.
Today. The New York Times writes how we track financial transactions to get leads on terrorists. WHAT BUSINESS IS THAT OF ANONE.
Abu-gharib or whatever: SO WHAT. Do we need to give aid to terrorists in recruiting more martyrs for ala (intentional use of lower case letters). Big Deal. Who cares if Jessica Lynch put a dog collar on some piece of filth.
Dang, I am so worked up, that I can't think of any more examples of how the press is working activelly against the interests of America.

I'm simply a realist. We all have these things we want changed but not enough to actually do anything about it. Anyone here participate in a recent protest? When was the last time you wrote your senator or congressman. It's basically all BS - everyone is "pissed about this" and "pissed about that" but not really - not really pissed enough to take action which means they simply talk about it in passing conversation.
So I don't take a lot of stock in people who really claim they hate things they way they are, yet like everyone else they're biggest problem if life is when two of their favorite shows are on at the same time.
Face it - the poor in this country have cable. The poor in India live in tin shacks with no water or power and kids comb through garbage piles for food. We need to put our bitching into prospective. In some countries they can simply throw you in jail for years and years without even charging you. Ask Nelson Mandella - he'll tell you all about it.
So I don't feel too sorry for anyone in this country. Who I do feel sorry for is victims of mass genocide in counties in Africa where one minute you're making food and the next minute solidiers kill your entire family. So I have a short fuse for people who bitch while driving around in their new SUV talking about all the problems they have.

1. Goes along with James' theory of thirds. A third don't want it, a third want it, a third don't care. So those that show up and are most vocal, articulate, get it.
2. I once read: People get the government they deserve. Most people know more about baseball than they do what is going on. They read the sports pages voraciously and ah well, who cares about the rest of the paper.

Well, people who are starving may just have all the motivation they need to mug you for your wallet unless higher values of human decency guide them.
Look at how some people in New Orleans reacted during Katrina. Muggings, beatings (just for the fun of it), shootings, looting. Even a few of the cops joined in.
