Not sure what it is about football players and insurance, but here are a few more players that went from football to selling insurance:

Lincoln Kennedy, a three-time Pro-Bowler and player in Super Bowl XXXVII
Ex-NFL quarterback Tommy Maddox, a first round draft pick in 1992
Emmett Johnson, former wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks
Dennis Havig, played in the NFL for 5 years

Buffalo Kicker Scott Norwood (Wide Right) was a NYL agent for some years after football. I believe he is in real estate these days.

Because they don't make enough money to be truly retired. A lot of them go into real estate and insurance where they can use their fame as a door opener.
 
Seems to be working for some of them. After being mostly a bench player for the Milwaukee Bucks for 12-years, Junior Bridgeman went from selling insurance and working at Howard Johnson during NBA off-seasons to being worth upwards of $400 million from investing in restaurants. Impressive.
