Targeting COI's in Groups Vs. Individually

I am relatively new in the p&c biz and I have done my fair share of sponsoring lunches, speaking to realtor companies and caravans, and speaking to an office of loan officers, etc.

Unfortunately, I haven't received very many referrals from the large groups. My best success is targeting loan officers who I do a home with by taking them breakfast and discussing my services. They usually give me referrals because they've had experience with me and seen the rates.

Am I correct in thinking sponsoring meals and speaking to groups of COI's does not relate to many referrals vs. targeting specific individuals and doing one on one networking?
