Forming an LLC and Getting Appointed with Other Companies?

So heres a scenario..

Let say James has his P&C and Life licenses already, and he's looking to sell insurance on the side, as supplemental income on his own time. (He has a full time job in an non-insurance related field)

He plans on forming an LLC. It's possible to get appointed to various different insurance agencies (travelers, progressive, etc.). How exactly would he go about doing this, to get started on a new venture? It wont really be "opening up your own agency". More so just being an independent agent, but under a LLC, correct?

Any advice is appreciated.
