Aetna withdrawing from Colorado individual health insurance market effective 2/1/11

Aetna Advantage Plans for Individuals, Families and the Self-Employed

Aetna no longer offers Aetna Advantage Plans for Individuals, Families and the Self Employed plans in Colorado.

We will continue to offer AARP® Essential Premier Health Insurance Plans, insured by Aetna in Colorado.

Note: As of October 1, 2010, Aetna Small Group (2-50) no longer offers products in the Colorado market.

Why are we making this change?
After reviewing our portfolio of Individual health insurance plans in Colorado, we determined we can no longer meet the needs of our customers while remaining competitive in the individual health insurance market.

While this decision was not easy, a number of factors were considered before making this important decision. In keeping with the best interests of our customers, we believe there are other insurers who can better meet their needs.

Impacting to existing members
Existing individual health insurance plans will receive one final renewal period. Depending on the plans’ renewal dates, some existing plans may not receive a full 12 month coverage period on renewal.

Plans with anniversary dates on or between February 1, 2011 and July 31, 2011

We will renew each plan for a further twelve (12) month period and coverage will cease at the end of the renewal period.

For example, if a plan’s anniversary date is on April 1, 2011, there will be one further renewal period of twelve months and coverage will end on March 31, 2012.
Plans with anniversary dates on or between August 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012
We will renew each plan until July 31, 2012. Effective August 1, 2012, all coverage under the plans will end.

For example, if a plan’s anniversary date is on September 1, 2011, the plan will receive one further renewal until July 31, 2012.
How will individual pre-65 members be notified of this change?
All existing policyholders will be notified by mail on or about February 1, 2011.

While we will continue to administer their individual health plan for at least another year, policyholders are strongly encouraged to seek alternative health insurance coverage prior to their policy termination date indicated above.

We appreciate your understanding regarding this decision.

I read about that in an Agent Navigator email earlier today. You must get it too . . .

Seriously, this is the first of many to fall.

Makes me wonder what Aetna is going to do. They have pissed off CMS.

My local rep for group and individual apparently is now just small group. Got an email mid week from some dickbrain in TX telling me they were my new rep for individual.

I have been slow on the trigger to move clients from Aetna but this pullout will light a fire.

I was actually pretty excited when Aetna entered the MD market in 2004. By 2006 I was even more excited to never have to recommend them to another client.

Do they have guarantee issue rights with another company when their policy terminates? Typically, they have a company step in and assume the business.

If NO to both above, how can anyone recommend Aetna going forward. Still 3 more years until the exchange and GI. Who knows which state they will drop next and are not competitive in AZ or FL either.

What State is next ?

I didn't email you last week!

No, but you thought about it.

Do they have guarantee issue rights with another company when their policy terminates?

Nope, unless CO has some special provisions.

Doesn't appear so.

Health Insurance & Managed Care - Colorado - Kaiser State Health Facts

Typically, they have a company step in and assume the business.

Doesn't appear Aetna is looking for suitors. If the block is small, no reason to expect someone to step up to the plate.

Looks like they are in 30 states, at least for now. AL, AZ, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MS, MO, NE, NV, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, DC, WV, WY

I would say AL, KY, DC, WY are all good bets and based on what they have done here can GA be far behind?

These policies are not guaranteed renewalable? The carrier can just walk out of the state away from its obligations without finding another carrier to assume the risk?

Guaranteed renewable, possibly, but not non-cancellable.

Yes, they can walk away. Been done before, including by Aetna.
