Where Are the ACA Navigator Positions?

If you are a navigator, you cannot receive compensation from any insurance company.

In NC, there are only two groups that filed to be navigators. Both were small groups. NC has $2,000,000 set aside for navigators. Say they get paid $20/hr = $800/week; $800/wk*1/2 a year (how long 1st AEP is) = $20,800

2,000,000/20,800 per person = about 96 navigators at $20/hr for 26 weeks, not to mention the managers who would get paid more. So 96 navigators to assist 9,700,000 people...

I thought they determined navigators were going to get 40/hr. so you can cut that number in half

What an unthought out mess!

Oh they thought about it....But they decided they needed to pass the bill to find out what was in it.......I still can't believe that came out of the mouth of a seasoned politician.

Could one of you clarify if that was $2,000,000 set aside for navigator salaries ONLY, or if it was $2,000,000 for the navigator program? All the numbers I heard quoted for other states were for the whole program (facility fees, utilities, toll-free telephone line, navigator health insurance, administrators, assistants, etc.)

$2MM doesn't go so far when you have to pay for phones, rent, and employee benefits on top of salary. If that's the case, let's welcome in the 3 NC navigators, their 2 assistants, and manager.

Grand total of grants awarded in April 2013 was $54 million, but then HHS took a little more money from the wellness and prevention fund, because Congress wouldn't appropriate more greenbacks to help the cause. Here is a very good article about Navigator funding and how it is a drop in the bucket in regards to the number of people that should be reached. Love Obamacare? Has the White House got a job for you!

The $54 million gets distributed across states depending on the size of their uninsured populations. Most health policy experts say this is a pretty small amount of funding, given the size of the task of reaching 48.6 million uninsured Americans.
When you consider the funding in that light, we’re talking about only a few dollars for each American eligible for the new programs (the 48.6 million number includes undocumented workers, who would not be eligible for the programs). Stan Dorn at the Urban Institute has described the navigator grants as “a drop in the bucket” when it comes to educating millions of Americans.
