The whole thing is scary. Not just California but around the country. All the states plugged their budgets with stimulus funds bigtime and still have gaping holes. So it is all a ticking timebomb where they are telling themselves that either stimulus funds will continue to come year after year or else deluding themselves into the usual phoney revenue forecasting. Just kicking the can down the road and then when you have make even deeper cuts next year or two then you can blame it on the federal cuts rather than state mismanagement.

Just read my local newspaper and it is glorifying the fact that several arts groups around the state will be able to avoid layoffs because stimulus funds are being diverted there. Yup, Barry is right those are jobs that would have otherwise been lost. Where is the job creation and what are you going to do next year though. Stimulus 2.0?

Change you can believe in.

California needs to bail itself out but I am in favor of a massive subsidy to California (you can have the stimulus funds to my state to help out) and perhaps a couple other states as an Illegal Immigrant Relief Program. It is the job of the Feds to enforce the immigration laws and protect the borders and the states are being asked more and more to pay for the feds failure. All the states should have to pay to help the most-impacted states (in other words federal money). If they/we don't like it then they can always put pressure on the feds to secure the borders and step up the ID programs.

On this, Winter, we disagree. Yes, it is the fed's responsibility to enforce the immigration laws, but when cities and states have BLATANTLY mocked the federal laws by invoking "sanctuary" status to illegals, then they have brought on the problems themselves. California is known for this type of behavior, including releasing convicted offenders back out in the general population without even a phone call to immigration. San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, many cities are known for it.

Let California stew in its own slop for a while. No bailout necessary. The legislators have created their own mess, now let them stew in it.

And how is that $3 billion in new debt for stem cell research in California working out for them? Oh, not just the debt, that was just the original amount. Debt plus interest. Oh, yeah.

I see those points and have adjusted my thinking accordingly. Tis the nature of small town America to want to help their neighbor's family even if the head of the household is still on the sauce as in California. The line between helping and enabling is mighty thin.

1/3rd!! No senor it is not possible - I don't theenk.

Unreal. 1/3rd? I bet benefits to illegals in CA is probably in the $15 to 20 billion range.

Arnuld was always talking Reagan this Reagan that - well time to channel Reagan - Mr. T2.

I think when Reagan was gov he had some crisis like this (not exactly the largest state going insolvent but it was not a minor deal) - Reagan did not back down. I forget what the crisis was. Arnuld needs to lead or get out of the way.

Tom McClintock is the guy with guts and brains in CA.
