How Long to Get to $1million P & C Volume?

Just wondering as I'm considering being an agent---how long did it take to reach $1 million in premium volume? I'm looking at more of the small to mid-size commercial and personal lines type of business.

Is 25k for 2 years plus 30% new biz and renewal commissions okay---then 40% renewal and new biz with no salary after 2 yrs.?
Just trying to figure if I can make it financially and how much volume is reasonable goal for first and second year....is 250k per year reasonable goals?
