Has anyone had any luck getting traffic or decent back links from Squidoo or Hub Pages? I've heard that they are great for this but I don't want to put too much time into them if they are not worth it,,,
Yeah, they're great for building backlinks, but not great for driving referred traffic really. Although, to be fair, Squidoo isn't as good for this as it used to be - Google "Squidoo slap" to find out more.
With Hub Pages I've heard that you get your links to change from "no follow" (not counting to Google) to "do follow" based on the number of "points" you've accumulated on the site. I think you have to have somewhere between 75-80 points in order to get the links changed. If you can get that many points, it's definitely worth the time invested. I've also found they're really picky and if you post an article on there that is posted somewhere else online, they don't want you to have any links in the article, or they consider it spam.
Both of these sites are also good at ranking in Google, in their own rights. So while you may not get "Link Juice" or SEO benefits from either of them you can still attract direct traffic.
We have been using Squidoo and Hubpages for clients, using some long tail keywords and they work well.
There are examples on non competitive terms of having multiple listings. Your website AND your Squidoo lens. So why settle for one listing on the first page when yo ucan have two!
That said if you only want link value then these are not really for you.
I have created pages on squidoo, activerain, linkedin, and hubpage. All have helped a little bit on page rank but hubpage is kind of strict in that your page can not be overly promotional and has to have original content.
Some people drive decent traffic from twitter squido etc., but i did not try yet. i dont know if creaitng an insurance related lences is a good idea but i will try sth.
Have you guys seen the competition in Google for online insurance 92,000,000 for those keywords alone. you have to narrow it down to a niche with at least 30,000 competing pages.
Yahoo would drive better business and conversions than what google is offering. Better to go where the market is Hot and the competition thin..... some thing to think about ?????? No wonder you guys are getting slapped by Google try building a FAN base before a Client base .... build it and they will come.

With solid content and keyword research, Squidoo can be an excellent source of traffic. Here's a simple Squidoo formula that will work.
Create a Squidoo lens based on the long-tail phrase "low cost health insurance texas" or any other keyword with low competition that's getting searches...
This phrase received 2,400 searches last month according to Google's keyword tool and would be easy to rank with based on the search results I'm seeing in Google.
Create a nice lens that's not spammy and have it link back to your site. In addition, write an original article and submit it to article directories like ezinearticles utilizing the same phrase. Link this article to your Squidoo page. Rinse and repeat... Then do this with a new keyword phrase.
This strategy takes time, but done correctly with some solid keyword research WILL generate targeted traffic to your site.
