Mark,
I can assure you that a firefighter who gets killed in the line of duty, notice I said "killed in the line of duty" recieves roughly $300k from the feds. Why some firefighters have not recieved it I don't know. Sometimes a community will work to provide additional funds in addition to what the feds provide.
I work closely with the SC Firefighers Association providing benefits through Colonial Life. They also have a life benefit through Provident as well for on job accident and life if their department so chooses.
While I believe your intentions are good, it's the approach that I'm not fond of. Are you helping them? Certainly. You would do well to also talk with them about disabililty as I mentioned earlier, when talking to them about life. Often times disability is a critical missing component of what they need.

I agree with you that we also need to offer them other kinds of insurance. They need all the protection they can get.
My problem with Disability is that most of the D.I. companies that I know don't take fire fighters. I'm sure there are companies out there that do take them, they are just hard to find.

There was a carrier a few yrs back that only worked the PRD market and offered up to a 1 yr or 2 yr benefit to police & fire. Could be Central Reserve but don't hold me to it.
Assurity offers DI to govt employees (including police & fire) subject to some benefit restrictions. I don't know much beyond that since that is not my market.

Mark,
You are correct. Disability is almost impossible on the individual level. That is why the association endorsed myself and Colonial. I'm not going into too much detail here, but if you want to shoot me a PM, I will be glad to explain how I think you may be able to expand your business considerably.

Colonial Life's products can be written in any state in the nation. For an individual to purchase their STD it would have to be offered in a group setting. Firefighters should be no problem as a lot of the guys I know here have the STD product through Colonial.
Colonials cancer product is also popular among firefighters due to the high rate of cancer in the industry. Colonial's cancer product can be purchased by an individual outside of any group setting, though a tad more expensive.

It should be presumed that I won't ever get better. When such a determination is reached, I hereby instruct my appointed person and attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes, let the 'fat lady sing,' and call it a day!
There are cultural and ethical differences that come into play. Your technique is to call the fire department and tell them that you and your wife were thinking about 911 and how great firefighters are and wanted to just buy them pizza and come by to visit. Not telling them that you have an agenda of increasing insurance sales.
You are basically frigging with them. That approach is dishonorable in my mind.

I will tell you what. The first time I have someone at the fire dept complain about what I'm doing, then I will stop. I am truely concern about firefighters. I don't know if you read all my post on this thread or not. I do tell them when I get there, that I'm an insurance agent. I guess the problem that you have is when I first call them and speak with them for 45 seconds that I don't tell them right off the bat that I'm an insurance agent. I am truely concern about firefighters and their families. My wife and I had many talks about 911 and how fire fighters die in the line of duty all the time.
But again, I've never had one firefighter complain about coming to see them or what I said to them on the phone. I'm sorry that you have a problem with it. I have a problem with fire fighter not being fully protected.
