A lot of talk has been going on these last few days about shock jock Imus in the morning saying nappy headed ho in referring to the Rutger's girls basketball team. Anyone want to touch this delicate little subject besides me?

What is happening people when someone can't joke about something in this "politically correct" society that we live in.

I think what Rosie rants about is far worse than what Imus said. He was wrong and he admitted it. He was suspended for two weeks.
I think we should put this behind us.
What Imas said was stupid and hurtful to a lot of people. I think the 2-week suspension by his boss was about right.
What would happen to him if he worked for a (your) company and said what he said in a meeting attended by people of diverse cultures?
It's not a quesiton of civil rights or free speech. It's an issue of respect and courtesy. I think the punnishment fits the crime here.

Free speech also includes the right to speak out in protest. Democracy and capitalism do not guarantee you that you will still be wanted, respected, and have commercial value if you are repugnant. Imus gets to do his thing, but so do others.
As far as his comments go, I think they were dirty and demeaning and I dont think you have to be liberal to feel that way. Freedom of speech includes the right to say all sorts of repulsive things, it does not guarantee you the entitlements of certain positions if you continue to do that. Can you imagine being a black parent and having your daughter referred to as a nappy whore or whatever when she is in fact a top athlete at a top college. I don't find it is all that funny and it is anti-American.
You had some bozo a while back fired for referring to Condoleeza Rice as a coon. My God, the woman is bright, competent, polite and dignified by any standards regardless of your political affiliation. Whether these clowns should be fired or not is for them to work out in the line of fire as they twist and turn in the wind, deservedly so. I am okay with it either way in regard to whether he should be fired. If they clowns are so slick with the mouth let them dig their own way out. I think that being the parent of an obese kid being shouted at(fatty faty 2x4 can't get through the kitchen door)m or a parent of a child who wears glasses four eyes is just as repugnant but you know what, it's legal and it should be. People need to stop whining about racism , it's legal to be a racist or a sexist in America and I'm glad. There are acts of racism, sexism, and all around bigotry everyday. My god I can't even discuss the illegal immigrant issue without being called a racist.

The intersting thing to me is our conflicting social standards. We have lowered the bar so far as to what is respectful and proper in our music, our tv shows, our advertising. Women in lingerie are acceptable on a billboard on the highway, profanity is acceptable on TV, degrading women is acceptable in music. You would think we've lowered our definition of what is appropriate so far that nothing could offend us, and then we decide something is repugnant and completely unacceptable. Why?
I've been a fan of the Imus show for years. Has anybody seen Bernard do the Cardinal, or Ray Nagen? They weren't going too far but this is?
Given the standards we've created in society, I think we're overreacting on this one. Sometimes people say stupid things, sometimes people's feelings get hurt. If we're going to have music and tv shows and advertising and clothing and language as we now have (and I don't necessarily think we should), then people's feelings are going to get hurt. It's the law of unintended consequences.
Like I said, having the freedom to say something and actually saying it are different. How 'bout being in line at McDonalds and saying "wow, you fat bastard. How 'bout getting a salad!" to the guy in front of you. Should he get offended?

If the guy was a friend of mine I would have no problem saying that "IF" and only "IF" he repeatedly talks about why he cannot lose weight. Eitherwise it would be insensitive and man.
If you cannot laugh about something, then you are taking things to seriously. The comment about what we see on TV, in the movies, etc. hit it on the head. If you lower or raise your expectations depending on how you look at it, then as a whole you shouldn't be offeneded, but then again, we are talking about the masses here.

John, we don't live in Utopia(there's no such place here on Earth), people say stupid things on both sides of the political spectrum, but they have to have that right to keep having an exchange of ideas even if you or I don't always agree. We sometimes get bad taste and freedom of speech intertwinded with one another. We can't go into a crowded store and yell Fire either, but that could cause physical damage. You can't incite a riot for basically the same reasons but bad taste and morals can't be legislated. As far as saying to the person in front of you hey fat bastard get a salad, that would be poor judgement AND poor taste because the needle headed little prick that said that to me would be SWALLOWING a salad in one smooth action!!!

Why don't they protest even louder about all of the language and social messages that spew out of Rap (Gangsta) music? With all of the money being made there, one could assume that it was very acceptable to say those words (perhaps if Imus would have sang the statement, it would have gone platinum). There is a very visible double standard.
