Aetna Advantage Plans for Individuals, Families and the Self-Employed

Gender-neutral rating, maternity coverage, Health Care Reform benefits and renewal rate changes for Colorado effective 1/1/11

As a result of recent regulatory changes, Aetna is implementing gender-neutral rating and maternity coverage for members of Aetna Advantage Plans for Individuals, Families and the Self-Employed in Colorado.

The new policy, which takes effect January 1, 2011, means that a person’s gender will no longer be a factor in determining their health insurance premium. Gender-neutral rating applies to all new and existing members.

Also effective January 1, we are enhancing plan benefits in Colorado to meet the requirements of the Federal Patient Protection and Access to Care Act (PPACA).

Important note: Beginning 12/1 you will not be able to run a quote for Colorado for 2011 effective dates. This is due to the implementation of gender-neutral rating and finalization of rates. We expect to open the quoting window in January 2011 and we will communicate the specific start date in a future alert.

How will gender-neutral rating be different?
Currently, a person’s gender is one of many factors that help to determine how much they pay for a plan: other factors include age, where they live, and health status. Because men and women typically use health care services differently at various ages, they are currently charged different premium rates when they purchase individual health plans.

With this new law, gender will no longer be a factor when determining plan rates. This means that some people will pay more than they used to, while other people will pay less.
