Hi,

I am 31 years old and currently in group coverage provided by my employer. I am planning to change to a Individual insurance.
Right now my employer charging $250 (Bi-weekly, my contribution)

We are 3 members in my family (including me). my wife is 26 years and my kid is 18 months.

Question is,
1.which company provides best individual insurance (affordable cost & best coverage)

2.What are the questions I need to ask a provider while enrolling and inquiry (please include hidden things, which providers won't mention in plan highlights )

Note: I request posters to please be clear about the second question. Please post all questions that you asked (or you missed to ask and relized that later)

Your best best is to work with an experienced health insurance broker (there are several from Texas that participate in this forum).

They can help guide you through these questions, answer ones you don't think to ask, and provide you with the best alternatives for your situation.

Pure "do-it-yourselfers" often get burned...

There are a lot of considerations, such as what features are important to your family (co pays, preventative care, prescriptions, etc.,). Your family history and current health situation is also important to evaluate as all individual carriers underwrite who they accept very different from company to company.

At $500/mo ($250 per pay) if it is a good plan with a low deductible at work - that might be your best option as well (if it is not ending).

1. Make sure the company is in good standing with your local insurance department
2. Make sure that they are paying out a good percentage of their premium dollars in claims. A good company will pay about 80% of their premium income to doctors, hospitals and other providers. A bad one is one that pays significantly less than the average for your state.

Really? Then how can they pay my 30% commission?

And where is this payout data located? What if a company invests in technology or new innovative products?

The 80/20 payout seems to be coming up more often legislatively and to me it is very anti capitalism.
