Pre-Licensing. Do I Need a Company to Sponsor Me in NC?

I had my license for 6 years and failed to keep up with the CEs when I moved into another career the last 4 years. Anyways, since my memory is not working, do I need to have a company sponsor me prior to pre-licensing class or taking the NC exam? I will be independent this time around. I was captive in the past.

no, not needed... but they recently (a year ago) started doing background checks (fingerprints), which can take up to 6 weeks, but i doubt it actually takes that long
