Question:

If a domain was registered (for example) for 11 years and is currently available, would there be any benefit for aging or would this domain be looked at as a brand new domain with zero aging?

Does not matter when the domain was registered, more important is when it was indexed. EX: your 11 yr old domain was indexed for the 1st time 3 yrs ago, effectively it is a 3 yr old site not 11.

If you pick up the domain from the same registrar that had it before they often do not update the Whois creation date. This is where the aging comes from. Don’t count on it.

However, even when the clock resets if the domain name still has backlinks around the web (hopefully some good ones) then as long as you properly 301 the old links to your new and relevant content, you should be in a non-sandbox situation with the search engines. You will also retain the PageRank the page previously enjoyed if you pick it up quickly.

The part about relevant content is key. If the old domain had backlinks that references some matter of insurance make sure the page you 301 that link to a page that talks about that line of insurance. This keeps the page aging as well.

For the best effect, try to make the new site look like a continuation of the old site, just a new and better refresh.

If this domain has been available (now)for exactly 1 year, but was indexed let's say 5 years ago, would that make it a 5 yr old site or a brand new site since it's been available for 12 months?

(sorry if these are dumb questions! I appreciate your time)

Yes, I went to archive.org along with domain tools. This domain was last "crawled" in Feb of 2011. It didn't show anything else dating back to 2001 when it was first owned.

Thanks.
