There are some others such as drupal or joomla. I know folks that have had good luck with both. Personally I think that WordPress is worth the effort. The reality is that if you try a few different themes and make reasonable efforts to maintain your security, it works very well.
An alternative would be to pay an actually developer to write code manually, but that's where we start looking at thousands of dollars for a site and no simple dashboard to edit it.
