Better check the entire speech. It was one of his "fireside chats" and as as I recall listening to it, it had to do with the state of the ecomomy. That's what you call first-hand history.
BTW, what was so terrible about Wilson other than he was a Democrat? His wife did a pretty good job of running things after his stroke. You will not give a Democrat a break. Anyway, FDR was the commander-in-chief and he still had the final word on who was who in his command---much like that clown we now have in the White House.
I'm not sure how old you are, yet I know the original origin quite well. It comes from his first Innaugural Speech, in 1933. If you are 75 years old you were born the year when he use that line.
FDR and other greats of History had a lot of problems, much like Bush, why I suggest that History will remember Bush in a rather good way. Of course depending upon how Iraq goes.
Whaddya think will happen in tonight's Ohio debate between Barack and Hillary?
Will the gloves come off?
I heard Mills Lane is the moderator. What time does the undercard start?
It starts at 9 EST I believe. It will be the show of the century if you hate Hillary and most normal people do. This is the last stand for the Ice Queen. Her last televised audience before D-Day next week. She is in a real tight bind. She played the tearful kumbaya routine at the last debate and people loved that but Obama's support kept growing. Since then she has tried to play the bitch in his face role but his popularity is still growing and people did not like that abrasive, nasty stuff. Yet she has to make an impact somehow to turn things around. How can she do that without running the risk of being booed like she was last time? Oh excuse me, I forgot. That is her problem not mine.
Would not miss it. Right up there with Saddam's execution.
Winter
------------------------------------ Spending Our Way to Prosperity
This is the debate where the Monday morning quarterbacks will be out in full force.
There's a right way to play it - but no one knows what that is. Does to get tough and really dig in or do we see the softer side?
True if you are just talking about Hillary. She has painted herself into a corner now. Because everything she does is planned she has to plan something for this debate versus being herself.
In regard to Obama it is crystal clear how he needs to play it. Keep the high road. Don't go for the bait on anything. Dont take any lip or any sass from the bitch but dont let her take you down a rathole either. He has enough of a lead that he doesn't need to do anything risky.
Have a nice day Hillary. As you have been saying for the last 8 years, it is time for a change.
Maybe she needs to bring Bill out for the charm. ohh Nevermind. That did not work well in S.C. did it.
It would really be interesting to study what went wrong. Not too long ago she was a shoe-in, pulling the highest national numbers and blowing Obama off the map. The last nose dive I've seen like this was Howard Dean. It's like she imploded.
The question is did she do something more wrong or did Obama do something more right.
Obama did it right by talking about change and the future while having no definite direction on what he is going to change or what the future holds.
If you are running against someone with as much baggage as Hilary, then it is best to talk generic and let her dig her own grave.

Born before that!
BTW, the "Fireside Chats" were inspirational. I rcall Jimmy Carter trying the radio call in bit. Really bombed.

I think the libs have a lot of hatred of Bush (understatement) and Hillary was the only leader of the opposition who might be able to win. To be against Hillary was to be for Bush or against women or liberalism of what have you. To be against Hillary for who she was, was not a possibility.
Then along came Obama which gave the libs a chance to still be against Bush and to have a national contender rather than just some Kucinich type. The minute the libs found someone better than Hillary, they threw her under the train and suddenly they were free to see all of her faults.
Oh yeh. One more thing. The left wing media that always favored her over Bush and the repubicans suddenly attacked her because they always go with the one who is furthest to the left, which is Obama now.
Hillary complained (no lie here) that she has gotten better and more fair coverage from Fox News than from the rest of the media. Certainly that is not something that I think either she or we expected to ever here.
And since Hillary is the only one with a universal health care plan and she's losing I can only surmise that universal health isn't as important as reporters try to tell us it is.

I think a lot of intelligent Republicans probably do too (although I think "hatred" is a pretty strong word).
I am a registered Republican.
I am embarassed by the Bush administration. I have been voting for President since only 1976, but my observation is that this is one of the worst ever. This bungling bunch of thieving nincampoops will go down in history as one of, if not the most incompetent administrations in history.
They even make Nixon look pretty good...

BTW, James, it all comes back to me now. March 4, 1933---and the rest of that line goes, "...nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes need efforts to convert retreat into advance."
Have some respect for your elders, James. Anyway, I am entitled to some senior moments.
I admire the fact that you are a student of history. Furthermore, you certainly are knowledgable about life insurance. It's just that I am amazed, having said the preceding, that your command of the English language leaves much to be desired. BTW, I am not commenting on typographical errors of which we are all guilty.

I dont disagree with that but the question or pondering posed in the previous post had to do with why Obama pulled ahead of Hillary so my comments were more internal to the Democratic party. I think that discontent with Bush may have caused and will cause some repubilcans and independants to vote democratic but then there are other factors that decide whether they support Hillary or Obama.
As an independent, I also am disatisfied with Bush in many ways but that does not mean that I can look back and wish that Gore or Kerry got it as the grass definitely was not greener over the fence either. Personally, I find this election far, far better than the last one. The issues are getting discussed, the dems have a could good candidates for who they are, and the republicans have half a candidate. Definitely not interested in an election where we are at war, there are health care issues, and economic issues but we discuss Kerry's and Bush's service or lack thereof in the Vietnam era day in and day out. I thought that was the pits. Truly, truly stupid.

Personally I believe Bush will be remember much like FDR, a man of his times. While FDR had problems no doubt, history will remember him kindly as being a man that defined his time. If we lost WWII obviously things would of been different, but really that was never in the cards. The German Generals that were not crazy knew when America sent troops it was over.
One of the great stories on why German Commanders and troops in the field knew that the end was near when American Troops was taken prisoner by them? When they went thru their packs and found cookies and cakes that mama sent them a few days earlier! Some knew but most just didn't have a clue what they were up against. When they found their American prisoners with Cookies from Mama, many just didn't understand how that could happen? Go back and read some journals of these German soldiers, they were dumbfounded to say the least!
