Why should I be fined for not wearing a seatbelt or wearing a helmet? Isn't that pretty much what the law says now, except no one waits for the accident?
The bottom line is that true freedom is not the ability to do the correct things, but to do the wrong things - as long as it does not affect others. How does it hurt you if I don't wear a seatbelt? As long as I can pay the bills if I'm injured, why should anyone give a damn.
But it's none of the government's business and it certainly isn't any of your business if I wear a helmet or seatbelt or smoke dope or anything else that does you no harm.

Basically what Al is saying that the "Rugged Individuallism" that the Nation is so well known for (at least too one degree or another) should be now consider a Nation of "Special Group Security".
The idea that anyone would openly say, "hey that might cost me so the Government has a right to make law" is bastardizing our System of Governence, it is hard to care or respond to the Al's of the world. I do fear this though, if there is enough "Al's" running around my child will grow up in a Nation that I do not know.
I have no doubt that there is a battle brewing in our Nation. In fact, I look forward to it, and Al, it has nothing to do with Religion. It will be those that want a Nanny State Vs those that don't.

You are right. I vote my basic selfish self-interest and make no apologies about it. Most people (studies show) do the same, but they won't admit it. I'm happy to.
For example. Even if I think candidate Jones is 'best' for the city, state, country, if he is going to raise my (already high) taxes, he won't get my vote... unless I will benefit from the taxes... such as mass transit which I like to take instead of driving... or airport construction (I fly a lot), etc.
Of course there is a balance. I would not vote for Huckabilly or Clinton because while they might be in my best interest (not!), I don't trust either one of them.
But by and large, I vote for more Reps than Dems as I feel that I and my family are (probably) better off. If I were on welfare or had a government job, or a bleeding-heart liberal, I'm sure I'd vote for more Dems. I'm just a middle of the road guy... more to the right than the left.
When Reagan asked if I was better if now than four years ago... it got me to think... and I've pretty much applied that formula.
I don't know whom I'll vote for this time... I don't much like anyone! Maybe I'll write in James or Winter or STI !!!

I used to be a wide-eyed liberal in my anti-Vietnam war days. I evaded the draft... I'm sure they are still looking for me... but I'm not afraid as these are the same people looking for OBL!
Once I started in biz for myself in 1978 and made some real money, I changed my way of thinking. I used to give lots of money to liberal causes only to see it wasted and their hand out for more and more.
I then started giving to the Salvation Army... while I didn't much care for the Jesus speech, they didn't waste their funds on "organization" (I still support them with a few bucks a year.) They do good work.
I was a good left-of-center Democrat... until Reagan came around and I became what they call a Reagan Democrat... which morphed into a full-bore Rep... which later morphed into an Independent (the day the first Bush raised taxes after "Read my lips" (and I voted for Clinton that year.))
Nothing is constant with me. At 60 I'm still a work in progress.

Right and part of that scene was the constant "paint all Jews with one brush stroke" kind of thinking that created an atmosphere where it was permissable to openly dump on the character, intellect, and morals of one particular religion. We know how that story ended. You may feel that you are protecting society from hitlerian thinking when you are so generally demeaning toward Christians but you are in fact using the same dynamics that the Nazis used to piss on Jewish culture.
You talk about the Christians waving their hands and all of that. Similarly my fathers people had/have their own native tribal traditions which may be foreign to you and a source of ridicule. If you are a free thinker, consider the possibility that it is none of your business how a person worships or whether they wish to worship God.

Between the fervent Christian right and the fundamentalist Muslims, those of us who are not part of either tradition really have to watch our backs as we have few if any friends in either camp.
Every Jew, Hindu, Buddhist etc. should have a shotgun... and keep it loaded. I have a Mossberg 20 gauge... obviously not a big weapon, but it will stop someone at close range, I'm sure.
I'm reminded of the famous line from The Godfather movie where Sonny says "I don't want my brother coming out of the mens room with his dick in his hand." Hopefully we learned a lesson LAST time Christians (in German uniforms then, in Russian cossack uniforms before that) came knocking on our doors.

Whoa, you have gone clinical. The theme of being scared to death of me and "you people" just keeps coming up over and over again. Next time you make your little hat out of tinfoil to protect against the evil rays, use the heavy duty foil that is used for cooking a turkey.

What in hell are you talking about? Absolutely clinical. You need to have your meds adjusted or lay off the Kool Aid or something. I have never supported Huckabee or advocated that you do or anything else.
