Hey guys and gals.
My wife and I were discussing at the dinner table kidney donation (family member going under knife in a couple of weeks to give to brother) and how it would potentially be covered. So I wanted to get your thoughts. How would the donor be covered? Would it be on their insurance, or on the donee's insurance? Would it be covered at all? I know different companies may look at this differently, so lets say they both have BCBS. What are your thoughts?

Most plans pay a nominal amount toward the cost for the organ donor. I say modest, but I don't know if it is adequate or not. The figure I have seen most often is $10,000.

Your insurance probably won't pay if you are the donor since the surgery on you is not medically necessary.

That's what I told my wife, that with it being not medically necessary I didn't see it being covered. A nominal amount from the donor recipient makes sense.
