Note: I spoke on the phone today with a man whom I think will be a great life/health agent... but he is foundering. I had someone once write me a letter like this, so I tried to return the favor. Perhaps it will help someone here.


Richard:

It was good talking to you. I hope I was of some help.

I urge you not to give up... at least not until you have really given it a good "go." This is NOT a hard business, but it requires you to be able to do some very, very, VERY difficult tasks. I don't know of any other occupation where you have to face negativity and rejection as often on a daily basis as you do in this business. But if you look at it as an "adventure" then you will surely succeed. As I said.. I have a sign on my desk that says "Embrace the fear." It works for me. We're all going to die anyway... so the hell with it. As Nike says, "Just DO it."

Try to remember that it's about helping people. Keep that in mind and the money will eventually follow (if you don't starve to death first!)

Honestly, this is a really fun business when you start getting people interested and sales start to happen. But you have to work hard and long and go through a lot of personal trauma before that happens. It will make you a better and stronger person. When you can do this biz... there isn't anything you can't do!

We're both 60. Look at all the crap we've seen in our lives. We're strong. We can do this... and what keeps me going is that we SHOULD do this. Yes, most people look at us as pretty low on the food chain. We're just "insurance salesmen." But the truth is that we help protect people from financial ruin. They don't realize it. They think we're just out for a quick buck. But we know that this is not even near the truth. At the end of the day, we do "good" for people without them even realizing it. It is what it is.

It does not come easy. It will take a long time... maybe a year... for you to wrap your head around on how to deal with the difficulties of day after day of "no, no, and more no." I spent a long time being stressed and grumpy about it. But if you keep at it, you start to get "yes" and the fun begins. It's fun because out of NOTHING you made something happen. I love turning a cold call into a sale. It's a pretty good 'high.' However there are a LOT of 'lows' in this endeavor... but if you keep it all in perspective and just trudge on, the good parts of this biz will more than make up for the bad parts.

If you stick it out... you will succeed. And you can take this business well into your 80s. A few years of hardship now will pay off down the line. As the old 1969 New York Mets fan used to say... "Ya gotta believe."

Call me whenever you want to talk. I have no doubt that you are going to be great at this. Just work to make it happen. It will. I have a "spiritual master" who always tells me this. She is trained in the ancient Bhakti vedic texts and teaches a philosophy that is optimistic and which helps one lead a purposeful life. It helps me daily. I suggest that you look for a belief structure that will give you the strength to make this journey. I think it is a good journey. I've learned more about myself in the past year than in the previous 59. If you think about it you will realize that "The journey is the reward."

You have choices. You can get a boring desk job and read reports others have written, or write reports for others to read. Or you can flip burgers. Or you can say "Welcome to Wal-Mart." Or you can be the Man in the Arena:

Great stuff. I wish I had somebody who would mentor me and care enough about my future to take the time and write a letter such as that.

Instead I'm looking around from agency to agency and not really finding what I like. I'm probably a good candidate to just start up my own deal and run with with it, but I kind of need support and motivation and mentoring and stuff from an agency. Seems like the majority of the deals around here are captive and/or are just plain set up to make money. Or, have weak products. Weak training, weak management , or weak products. Or, a combination of all of those.

"You sell, you are cool. And sell a lot. You want to be 'family', you want 'friends', then go to the bar or the club, here we just sell to make money."

Well, I paint kind of a cold picture, but that's how it seems at times.

Very nice letter Al. I haven't seen any problem in this business that 4 hours a day of marketing couldn't fix. Whether or not we choose to do that (I'm guilty) is up to us.

If you truly believe that you should practice what you preach and actually provide advice. It seems that all you do on this board is come on every few months and try to recruit people for your downline.

What disgusts me is that you tried that with me, but quickly abandoned the idea after I told you I already have GA contracts and I confronted you about "what" specifically made your products so much better. I'm still waiting on an answer.

Salpro,

I have helped many agents over the last 1-1/2 years here thorugh my communications not only on the board but also off the board, helping them find quality IMO's/MGA's for annuities, senior products, life, and health.

You are implying that I'm only here to recruit. WRONG! How about we all be supportive, positive, and treat each other with total respect. I think this is the way to make this board better.

The UandIWin thing that you are referring to is actually a very good option for many agents since the commission equivalents were increased Jan 2008 to the industries highest levels. Things do change and improve. Salpro, I appreciate your 'hint' and will try to continue to only 'HELP' other agents as that's why I'm here. Hope you realize that's my #1 goal as I believe that is your's as well.

The amount of respect I give you stopped after you tried recruiting me multiple times and could not answer a few simple questions regarding compensation. It seemed as though you were turned off by the mere fact that I have knowledge.

Commissions don't mean anything without proper training. Give the board some numbers about the compensation for a new agent who wants to sign up with Golden Rule, Assurant, GTL, World if you think your company offers the highest commissions, as well as training. Within 10 minutes after submitting my contact information my e-mail address was bombarded with term life and health insurance spam e-mail. That's not a good sign.

Walk the board through the training process for a new agent selling health insurance in any state and then we'll talk. The problem with these larger outfits is that they force their agents to have tunnel vision because only a few carriers are represented and they don't teach their agents about the other options available in their respective market.

It's funny how I did not see Aetna, Unicare or BCBS listed as one of the carriers as their products are very competitive in some states.

Trying to consistently have agents PM you for more information negates the so called "help" that you propagate. I have made offers to some new and experienced agents who would like to add Fidelity Life to their product line because I'm not trying to make 80% of an agent.

I also can honestly tell people why I use a particular product vs. the competition and I back it up with evidence because my income does not rely on my downline.

But when you have to make sure that your "legs" are fully supported you become a recruiter vs. an insurance professional.
