There are currently 516 companies with a Best letter rating. Bear in mind that many companies have multiple ratings due to them operating as "sub-companies"... for example Guardian, Guardian Insurance & Annuity, and Berkshire account for 3 ratings but are essentially one company. NYL, NML, ON, etc also have more than one rating.
There are :
A++: 22
A+: 114
A: 110
A-: 128
So, over half of rated companies are better than A-. But with over 130 companies rated A+ or A++, my decision is to not use a company lower than A+.
