Life Insurance Sales Out of State

Has anyone sold life insurance out of state without seeing the client? I have an opportunity to sell individual policies to people in California, but I'm in Michigan. Do I have to be present for the signature? My Hartford Life rep says I need to physically be there to take an app. Any way around this?

I do it all of the time, but only states that I am licensed in. I do a lot of business in Texas, Arizona, Michigan, etc... but I'm here in PA. I would question your Hartford Life rep... Every life company that I know of allows this. Not to say that a company wouldn't have a restriction, but as long as you're licensed, you're legal.

Thanks... I guess I was a little naive to think I couldn't. Would you recommend using a quote engine on a website? If so what is the best way to use one? Also what are some good companies to get appointed with as an independent?

Go to www.compulife.com. You can install the quote engine on your computer and use it free for 4 months.

Seeing what plans are competitive and their basic underwriting information will determine your appointments. Except for certain states, you can be appointed at the time of submission.

Many companies are fine with just mailing the policy for signature but a few do require you to actually be present when the client signs. I saw it more on some of the easy issue policies that didn't require a medical exam. I can see how it would avoid adverse selection because you won't have a 350 pound guy claiming he's only 180. On a lot of non med policies they're okay with an e-signature or one mailed. On a policy where a medical exam is required it should not be an issue, but then again companies can make their own rules.

Your rep is probably right....MetLife also requires you to be there in person for signatures. Stupid, but that's the way it is.
