I have just signed up for Lifelock. They have been advertising pretty heavily over the last few months and I finally decided that it was a pretty cheap way to prevent identity theft. The marketing g campaign with the CEO's social security number is a real stroke of brilliance.
I am waiting to hear back from them, but I have heard of a few group health insurance agents who are providing this service to their clients for free or at a substantial discount, as a new exit barrier/service. I am looking into what kind of discount you can get with an enterprise account.
If you ever met anyone who had their identity stolen, you can easily see why the service is a small price to pay for the peace of mind.
I think that this is a really good product and will do more research to see how it fits in my portfolio.
One thing I did notice is that one of the directors is from Vimo, a company who scans this forum to cold call us about leads. Kind of funny in an ironic sort of way.
I believe they are currently being sued by Experian.
My basic understanding of the LifeLock system, other than the 'insurance' component, is that they set your "file" up on a quarterly basis and issue a fraud alert to all three companies. Something you could easily do by yourself if you were disciplined enough to do it. Guess how much that would cost ya? Nada....
I hope they're giving you a good deal. I was offered 40% discount.

Agreed Sam, the marketing is brilliant!
Have you seen the TV ads where the guy is in Manhattan with the bus with his SS# on the side?

I do believe that there is a little more to it than this, but for this alone, it is worthwhile for me. Guess what, I am not disciplined enough to do this regularly!
Like I said, the quarterly fraud alert is the main gig, the other stuff (like the insurance) is ancillary. The fraud alert is specifically what Experian is suing over.
I find the article interesting and was surprised to see that Mr. "SSN on the side of the bus" got scammed on a phony payday loan by having his............SSN on the side of a bus

I agree with you on the need for ID theft insurance. I disagree on the source of the coverage provided. Do you want some new company that just started flooding the airways with advertisements or would you rather have your insurance backed up by the Travelers, or the Hartford, or Safeco? Seems to me to be a no brainer...
Call your homeowners insurance company and see if you already have the coverage or see if you can have it added.
How many illegal aliens are using that guys social to register for employment? I have this vision of the bus driving by with his social on the side and 100 illegals writing it down.
I have no idea how this would prevent someone from using the social for employment or identification purposes.
I believe that all 3 credit companies offer the ability to "lock" your credit for free. Therefore, if you want to save the money you can just do the legwork yourself. Over the years, this can save you a good bit of money. I'm not sure how much the other bells and whistles were really worth anyway.

There are basically five areas of Identity Theft To be concerned about. Drivers License, Social security, Medical, Character/Criminal and Financial. Then there's the issue of the definition of identiyt theft. The situation may just be a theft case rather than Identity Theft. Then what?
Dricers license: If someone stals your license information and use it to get a license in another state what do you do?
Soc. sec.: What if someone uses your number to get employment?
Meidcal: what if some steals your information and gets medical care in your name?
Character?criminal: What if someone commits crimes in your name?
Financial: What if someone does a financial transaction with your personal information..
So in many of these cases it may just take more than having a monitoring service. There may also be a need for Legal Services.
Locking up a credit file is ok, but what about the other threats? Especially when considering many have profesional licenses to protect. Pre-Paid Legal has teamed up with Kroll to provide Identity Theft services. There are many insurance agents and other professional signing up to offer the Legal, and Identity Theft plans. Legal Services combined with an ID Theft Plan is a great combination.
Do yourself a favor, take the time to call all three major credit bureaus and put a security freeze on your credit. It is much safer than Lifelock as they only put a security warning on you credit report.
If you freeze your credit you will receive a PIN # to unfreeze it whenever needed. It cost 10.00 per bureau. I did this and if you pull my credit, it will show that there is a security freeze AND it won't show any of my credit history. This is 1000 times safer than Lifelock and cheaper too. There is no way anybody can open credit in my name without the PIN numbers.

I've learned never to say never. If someone wants to hack your file bad enough they can get it. PIN numbers can be hacked too. It's unfortunate but there is always a loop hole in the system. Usually a human loop hole.

Good points on the different areas of ID Theft. So are you saying Lifelock doesn't cover all the areas? I was thinking they did, but I'm not sure.
From my understanding Lifelock does'nt do monitoring. People can always contact them and ask exactly what they do cover. The Pre-Paid Legal identity plan does daily monitoring. It cover the member and spouse for one monthly fee. The combination of a Identity Theft Plan and a Family Legal plan is a hard combination to beat. Do some research because the way things are today have Identity Theft Coverage is a must especially if you have a professional license. Just consider the problems that can come up if someone commits a crime with your information. What will happen with your licensing? Identity Theft may not happen, but i'm willing to spend $26.95 a month (Family Plan and ID theft plan) just in case. as always do your due dillegence.
