I've been a Life/Health agent for 4 years and recently obtained my P/C license. I've had good success driving around town and walking onto construction jobsites in the morning hours before I hit the office. It's been great for starting my P/C book of business and is leading into some Life and Health leads as well.

Any other ideas to kickstart my P/C book of business geared toward contractors?

You just show up and give your card or do you give them a coke or something?

I made a flyer detailing the types of insurance I provide for contractors with my card stapled to it. It will probably get tossed unless you make an impression. I sell service first, then price...

(Keep in mind that other contractors walk sites and solicit each other for cabinets, flooring etc. all the time) I mention that I'm insuring "xyz" project or company down the street and saw this project and wanted to introduce myself. I typically walk all the construction sites in "xyz" area to make make sure everyone is taken care of and getting good rates. I let him know that I'm accessible, I come to them and I'm on local jobsites all the time if he has any questions etc. I ask him/her if I can review their insurance and if not, I grab his card or his contact info and find out when his insurance is coming up and put him in my spreadsheet to contact later.

I do this a few times a month and I've had a good response. I'm developing a good little niche in my community.

Hey J
Man that sounds like a great idea, I just passed my P&C test today and start with Allstate tomorrow, so I can use all the good advice I can get, that is definately one I wouldn't have come up with. Now that I can flush all that useless info, from the test, out of my head, I can start thinking of ways to generate some business, actually sounds like some fun. Well good luck and if you have any other ideas pass them on.
thanks
Roger

JRoot,

You may also want to keep a pad and pen handy in your car while your on the road. In NJ, I pass several dozen contractor vehicles per day.

While stopped at a light, write down the business name and phone number from the truck. You can call them and say something like you saw how courteous and safe one of their drivers was on the road and you have a program that they may qualify for with great rates and coverages and that you provide great service for other contractors in the area.

Good idea, I like that. I always think when I see contractor vehicles on the road that I need to get a hold of them, but always forget.

Hi J.

I haven't obtained my P&C license yet, but getting there, but this is a great idea. Especially since my husband is a home builder and he knows a lot of contractors.

Do you mention pricing on your flyers or just the benefits?

A mini recorder works wonders. A lot easier than trying to write down info while driving.

When I take notes in the car by the time I get home & try to read it you would think I was writing in Farsi script or had been on an all night drunk.

Row B Section 52 - It can also remind us of where we parked the car! LOL Bob, I couldn't help but think of that commercial that plays all the time. I can't imagine how horrible it would be if I had to listen to a recorded list of "honey do's".
