If in doubt, pre-screen.

Essentialy they will need to have a BMI under 30, non-smoker, no other meds (such as BP, cholesterol) and Ac1 must be in normal range.

Aetna's online app is supposed to be improved very soon. Either May or July. Can't remember which.

Quite a few agents have given up and use the paper app.

Aetna recently changed their uw guidelines "to match other carriers". I haven't yet downloaded the new guide, but from what I hear, type 2 diabetics must now have a BMI of 27 or less vs. the old cap of 32. Also it appears that colitis is now declinable, as well as bipolar and a couple of other conditions that no one else but Aetna previously accepted. The good news is that Assurant is underwriting type 2 diabetics over age 62 (or 63, can't remember) in certain test markets. If the claims experience is good, they say they will expand to all markets.

Correct on the type II. Colitis is still possible depending on med history. Had a bipolar declined the other day which was a shock but it turns out there was more to her medical history than originally revealed. Not sure if I am going to continue that one or not.

The new guide is mute on bipolar but does indicate they will take OCD's which some carriers will not.

I used to use New Era for hard to place cases. The cat plan is actually pretty decent and less expensive than the risk pool (unless it's rated). And no, it's not major medical, but the limitations are actually quite high. I've always looked at it as something in-between MM and a limited plan, especially when you pair it up with the 'companion' piece.

Not my go-to carrier, but it definitely has its place for difficult cases...

I've actually got a case that I need to place with NE. He's 60, type-II diabetic, but he's in excellent health. Active, fit and in shape. He didn't even know he had it until he went to the doc for something else.

I've lost contact with the GA that I used to get NE from. So whoever PMs me first, I'd like to see about placing this case with them.
