"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." Ronald Reagan

Yeah, it's pretty scary that this is where we've come. I'm not sure of the validity of following quote, but it is credited to Alexander Fraser Tytler and relates to the rise and fall of a democracy (even though this country wasn't founded as a deomocracy - we now act like one).
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.
So where would you place us on this list? We are definitely fast approaching the point where the majority is calling for more entitlements. I personally think we're in the compacency to apathy phase and will soon move to the dependence phase.

The abundance we have becomes complacency because we don't feel fulfilled spiritually because we forgot the supplier again. God brings us to our knees to call us home to find true fulfillment again and again. "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are CREATED equal..."
