Question about shotgun             Go to Top

For almost 25 years I've had the following weapon in the house:

Specs at:
Shotguns by Mossberg - MOSSBERG 500 CRUISER SHOTGUN 20/18.5/CYL PISTOL GRIP by Personal Security Zone

Back then we had some "problems" near our neighborhood (a drug house... happens in the best of areas these days!) and I went to the store to get a weapon for personal protection. The guy told me this would be a much better choice than a handgun. He made a lot of sense. I paid about $150.

I've only fired it once... about 15 years ago (in the woods at a target, not at a person!) I try to keep it clean but I've never oiled it or anything. The gun is kept next to my file cabinet, leaned up against the wall in the corner... easy to get to when necessary (and it HAS been necessary a few times in the past years when someone has read something I've written... like this... and decided to show up at the door... to "talk" to me. (For a while after this piece was written we had 24/7 police protection.)

I have a box of 20 gauge shells I was was given when I bought the gun (from Wild Sports) They are Winchester super-x long range 1 oz shot 2 3/4 dr. eq. pwdr. x20. (I have no idea what that means). They are in the original box and I keep them in a nice, cool, dry part of the house. (Of course the gun is loaded, but there is no shell in the chamber and safety is on. Just the noise of pumping it will get the attention of whomever is in front of it!)

Question 1: Is there a shelf-life to shotgun ammo? Any ammo?) If you instruct me to buy new ammo, what is best way to dispose of old? Call the sheriff to take it? Bring it back to store?

Question2: If I were to hire someone to come over and clean the gun, where would I look for someone reputable? Gun club (shooting range?) What should I pay? $200. (Do you know Henri Watch Repair in New York City wants $800 (and up) to clean my 50 year old Patek Philippe watch! Jeez! It's not even one of the better models!) It's gotta cost less than that to clean the gun!

Anyone in my immediate neighborhood who has a gun has a handgun. I used to be good with a handgun, but I've been to the range and these days with "older eyes" I can not hit the target with a 38 ... but my disabled wife... with one working leg and one working eye... is a crack-shot with a ladies (lighter-weight) S&W police special snub-nose 38. Go figure!

No one I know has a rifle or shotgun so there is no one to ask about ammo... except here... and I assume there is someone here who knows something about these weapons.

Thanks,

Al

Keep your powder dry seems to ring a bell from some old movie or book, but I have shot some really old shotgun shells with no problems. Here is a link to an answer to question 1. What is the shelf life of ammunition? - Yahoo! Answers

Question 2. Take it to a local gunsmith. It should cost less than $100. Since it is not dirty from firing it, it just needs oiled and a light cleaning.

I read your article, just wondering if it was someone of Jewish decent that showed up at your door to threaten you?

At least a shotgun is a great weapon for home protection. I think a handgun isn't a good idea.

Go to a range and from the 25 yard line, fire a handgun. Harder than you think - now imagine it's night and you're nervous.

Personally, I don't have any guns in my house.

Re: Question about shotgun             Go to Top

You are welcome to come to mine if you need protected. I can hit what I am aiming at with a handgun from across any room in my house. Handguns are for up close and personal, which is what the situation will be if someone comes into your home uninvited. Shooting at someone 25 yards or further away is frowned upon in most courts of law unless they are pointing a gun at you, in which case you are screwed if you don't have one to point back.

You should dispose of the old shells by placing the barrel of the gun into your mouth and pulling the trigger.

Trust me, I competed in the Marines.

Regarding my house, I have 7 year old. Following MD law guns must have a lock and ammo stored in a separate location.

Not much use when someone's coming up the stairs - can't call a time out:

"Hold on while I take the trigger lock off and load it."

I certainly understand your position.

When the kids were young I didnt keep loaded guns in the house or guns that were easily accessible, loaded or not. My kids grew up around guns and had their own as soon as they completed Hunter Safety class in late Junior High years.

We lived out west which has a very different attitude about guns than in the east.

When it has to be stored unloaded with a trigger lock what's the point.

Playing the odds....for every article you show me where a burglar broke in, went upstairs and killed a family I can show you 100 for accident home shootings especially when kids are in the house.

Personally we have an alarm. If there's a break-in it'll sound like an air raid. If after that someone still wants to runs upstairs and look for us then....

I don't think so. It could have been. It was a whack-out woman who kept banging on the door. My wife called the sheriff while I had the shot gun ready in case she was able to knock down the door. The sheriff came, took her away and that is the last I ever heard about it. They started giving us drive-by protection and after I got a lot of hate mail they posted a plain-clothes person in a car across the street.

We got over 10,000 letters with checks, cash, and money orders. At one time I had over a $100,000 worth on the dining room table. Somewhere in the archives of the Sacramento Bee newspaper is a pix of that as they covered the story. I was on network news... had my 15 minutes of fame as it were.

When it was all over after about 3 weeks, we had collected $201,000 from that letter. You can verify with the temple and the Jewish Federation in Sacramento if you don't believe me. (No, I didn't keep a dime... and we got a lot of $5 and $10 bills.) Most of the money came from Jews (one guy gave $18,000... a wealthy guy who owned a computer company in San Diego. He sent it on a blank bank check and it took me a week to track him down to thank him. BTW, the number 18 is "special" to Jews so we got a ton of $18 checks!)

We also got money from lots of Christians and Muslims as well.

It was all pretty exciting when the post office would deliver sacks of mail to us. It was not expected. It just blew us away!

We also got many thousands of books... delivered to the house. They were stacked up everywhere. Wife was not pleased about that!

The temple built one hell of a nice library with the money and the books. (No they did not re-name it after me!) Believe it or not, the temple was way under-insured for the arson attack and had it not been for this good fortune I'm sure the library would never have been rebuilt.

Playing the odds...the number of unarmed men who have ever used a gun, to shoot an armed bad guy, first, is zero. I respect your right to remain unarmed.

Not to come off as naive but if I hear someone coming up the stairs or hear them break in trust me - I don't need a gun.

Again, if it's a surprise and I'm woken up too late, wouldn't matter since I wouldn't have time to get a trigger lock off and load it.

I've posted here and written elsewhere some stuff I wasn't too proud of upon a second read, but I've never gone this far.

Lemme guess....you'll grab their gun, bend the barrel to a 90 degree angle with your bare hands, tear off their heads and go poopie down their necks?

Re: Question about shotgun             Go to Top

Its clear this section of the board has become a venue for personal attacks and no longer a forum for reasoned debates.

Although I despise all things liberal, I respect their right to have these fringe ideas. My concern with the politics of these times is these fringe ideas are becoming accepted more and more (like violence on the News) as normal and that is dangerous.

Right thinking people must always stand up to the rhethoric that flows so freely during times of crisis and despair (whether real or orchestrated).

What we see is only an illusion. What is real is what goes on behind the scenes and are not privy to; so we get so fascinated by public opinion which is inconsequencial because it changes with the breeze of each passing event and what is true today may not be so tommorow.

I havent commented lately because the tone of the conversation has changed. We must never forget that even though many of us think incorrectly; We are at our core Pro-American and if we are not then deportation proceedings can begin for the anti-Americans tommorow. I believe disagreement over policy and ideas is healthy but if the person does not believe in the concept of what America stands for; they should be deported. They are an affront to all those who have shed blood through the centuries for the nation.

Yeah, I must be missing something. Why does it turn personal so quickly, or for that matter, at all ? This site and all others like it would suck if everyone agreed on everything.

This is true. I asked a simple, non-political, non-argumentative question about a shotgun and one person here suggests I use it to commit suicide.

I don't mind strong, impassioned debate that expresses a logical or even semi-logical hypothesis, but posting "Hey, go kill yourself" is (as McCain said the other day) beyond the pale.
