"If he loses, it will shake the very ground that we stand on mentally as far as what we need to be to succeed," said Robert Gordon, a 48-year-old engineering surveyor from Dallas. "From day one, we've been told to be a certain way, to be neat, intellectual, speak clearly. He is the symbol of what we were told to be by our parents and by society as a whole. If this doesn't work, what does that do to our psyche? What do I tell my sons?"

Although he did not mention it, hopefully Mr. Gordon is actually planning to vote. If he and all the other dems who are prepared to cry racism actually go out and vote, Obama would win easily- very, very easily. Of course you have to put one foot in front of the other to go out and vote but you can cry racism while watching Oprah.
Also, he misses the point. The acting a "certain way" just makes you more competitive. It does not give you an entitlement to the job. Does anybody notice the similarity between this fellows comments and Biden when he said that Obama is a "clean and articulate" candidate. Yet it was racist when Biden said it.

If racism was a factor Hillary would have easily beat him.
Quite so, and then there is the pithy question of how many votes he would have gotten if he had not been black or semi-black.
Obama can still win this thing. Geez, what a bunch of wimps. Just get out the vote. This is a democratic year and the number of registered dems is through the roof. A year ago, McRommel was so far down in the polls he was laying off staff, carrying his own luggage from town to town and totally broke. Palin says boo to the dems and now they are totally disabled. McCain is not a zippy candidate but he would never have survived over the years with that kind of attitude.

Unfortunately, despite having billions upon billions of dollars thrown their way over the last forty or so years, the black community (generally - of course there are exceptions) refuses to take responsibility for themselves.
It is easier to blame others. Some folks just have to be victims.

First let me say that I am white and may not truly understand how hard life can be if you are black. Still it seems to be that leaders in the black community that preach personal responsibility and self reliance are in the minority and they are certainly not out front leading the charge. Can anything ever change as long as that is the case?
You know what, if you do not win this time, you try again in 4 years. Look at the number of African-Americans in high elected positions. If not Obama in 2008, maybe Deval Patrick 2012.
Win or lose the general election, Obama winning the nomination should be considered a victory.

And there is also the inconvenient truth that the republicans of late have had a better record of placing minorities and women in high positions so it is not exactly true that everything goes backwards if a dem is not elected. Condi, Colin Powell, Elaine Chao, Gonzales, etc, etc. And under Clinton?

That doesn't matter. Look how the Dems treat Black Republicans. What to they call Powell & Condi? Remember all the things that Michael Steele was called a couple of years back? There was a lot of racism there.

As they say, you can always tell the pioneers - they are the ones with the arrows in their back.
I see progress though, however slow. To have a woman and/or a black as Secretary of State would be or should be a dream come true for the dems. Instead, they have kicked and demeaned my gal Condi for years. No one one is saying that she cannot be scorned or faulted for her political views if one does not agree but they have really trashed her and she has had to deal with alone and with no whining.
On the plus side, conservatives are fighting back now when they do that to Palin, and some dems actually agree with them, on the issue of not trashing women just because they are conservative. The dems are in an extremely embarassaing situation now where they are arguing that no experience that a woman has is important unless it is exactly the same experience that a man in washington has. Some libs are actually slapping their face openly and the conservatives are fighting back hard. This is a far, far better shake than Condi got. This is good. Palin does not owe her journey to Hillary and Ferraro. She owes it to the large number of women that show that you can be conservative and woman too.
