An old farmer pulled his wagon up to the creek and it was swollen from heavy rains. He needed to cross.

He had been to town and bought a duck, a fox, and a sack of grain. The ricketty bridge would only support him and one item at a time. How could he get all 3 to the other side safely? Remember he could only take one at a time.

For instance, if he took the fox first, the duck would eat all the grain by the time he got back.

You have 1 minute left.

First he takes the duck over because if he leaves the duck alone with the corn the duck will eat it.

He then comes back and gets the fox and takes the foox over but he leaves the fox there but takes the duck back across because he can't leave the duck with the fox or the fox will eat the duck.

He then leaves the duck on the original side and takes the corn over to where the fox is and leaves the corn there with the fox.

He then comes back across the river and picks up the duck and takes it back across to the other side.

Now they are all across the river.

Is this correct? It took me more than 2 minutes to figure this much out.

About 30-45 minutes. I couldn't get anywhere until I figured out I would have to carry something back across. I grew up with those type of riddles told by my grandparents who lived with us. They were both born before 1900 and think these were a big form of entertainment prior to the advent of radio and TV.

I was trying to answer them logically.

My memory was jogged though. I remember some of those riddles.

I knew this riddle in 4th grade.... well now i'm 29 and I couldn't remember for the life of me the order they had to be taken!
