(For the record, I am not much of a wine drinker. I grew up on booze... the hard stuff... and still drink it to this day... 3 oz. before dinner... gin (Beefeaters only) or Gentleman Jack Whiskey (the high-end Jack Daniels... worth the extra few bucks if you really like sour-mash sippin')... for the past 40 years. My father "preached" the value of a little alcohol each day... and lived to 85. My mother is 84. I should make it to a hundred... if the anti-booze, religious Christian right doesn't bring back prohibition.)

Pretty funny post, Al. I bet even Winter laughed a little.
There was a wider study done with 60,000 people in a blind taste test - same result; zero correlation between price and taste.
I have fooled a LOT of "wine experts." One of our favorite wines is Piesporter Michelsberg Kabinett from Germany. I've served it to countless self-proclaimed "wine snobs" all emphatic that they can easily spot a cheap bottle.
All of them raved about our favorite wine; asking us if we traveled to Germany to get it. No, it's at our liquor store for $8.99.
In a more embarrassing story I gave another one of my buddies (proclaimed wine snob) a merlot - he loved it. After he finished his glass I slid him the metal screw off cap and said "oh, forgot that you might want to sniff this."

Interesting post, Healthagent. At the local cigar shop, I like one of their $2.25 cigars better than any of the more expensive ones I've tried there.

I have some wine-snob in-laws. What really gets me going is when we go out to eat, he orders the wine and, since he the friggin' expert, he also chooses the wine. His wines will generally be in the $85 per bottle range, and I get stuck paying half.
On a recent restaurant trip, we had a third couple we were paying for which meant having to get two bottles. His wine choice that time cost $110 each. You could hear my rectum clench the chair when I saw the bill. Mind you, I don't even get to look at the wine list nor have a say in this. By the way, he has an expense account and I do not.
$110 per bottle my butt. He even had them decant the wine so it could "breathe" for a while before drinking. I could have jumped the table with a cork screw. I passed the word back through a relative that the whole wine thing was really pissing me off. We have not been invited to dinner since.

Al, perhaps you missed the last paragraph:
"I passed the word back through a relative that the whole wine thing was really pissing me off. We have not been invited to dinner since."
My favorite "wine movie" for wine snobs is "Bottle Shock", which puts wine snobbery into perfect perspective. Of course the joke is that the new snobs are now in California.

Sounds like he has no class. I'm all for splitting the bill but you need to be a bit self-aware. If I'm splitting I'm not going to order the stuffed lobster and a Ketel martinis. That's classless.
It's unspoken that everyone basically stays on the same page. Now, I have in-laws too and trust me, if my father-in-law invited us out and ordered at $100 bottle of wine I'd absolutely say "oh, so we're not splitting tonight."
Now my father is the "save every cent" guy so if we were out to dinner and I went to order a $100 bottle I'd get the "my generation" speech again.

This basically describes why health costs are so far out of control. Whether it is the insurance carrier or the government, people are making choices bases on what someone else is going to pay for. Allow more pain or gain by making choices where you have some skin in the game and a whole new mindset suddenly appears. Just as in choosing wine.

Well, if you had to purchase a "cheap" Christmas gift, get a wine aerator so this man doesn't have to waste any precious moments.
And next time, if there was a next time, I would simply call ahead to the restaurant and ask if they allow you to bring your own, with a corkage fee. Most restaurants are happy to oblige.
Then you can whip out that $1.99 bottle I saw today at WalMart!

My wife is a wine drinker. I'm a beer man. And the best beer in the world is the stuff I make myself. I admit I'm biased. She buys the Oakleaf (Walmart) brand the most. I think it is as fine as any wine out there. Oh their cab (see I'm sophisticated) may not win any cab awards but I think it is a good red wine to have with a big steak. And who doesn't love 2 Buck Chuck?
Anyone that spends more than $20 for a bottle of wine has more money than sense. I can make 3 gallons of great-world-class beer for $25.00. The porter I have in my keg right now is one of the best of the style I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I made 5 gallons for under $50.00.
I'll be kegging my ESB this week and look forward to enjoying that for the holidays.

Actually they say the metal screw off caps are by far the best way to seal a bottle of wine. Natural cork leaks way too much.
