Sometimes the difference between page 5 and page 1 is a small one. It really depends on your competition and your SEO strategy.

If you are on page 5 with no SEO strategy, you may be in a better position than you realize.

I'd say if you arent in the top 5 results, you are dead in the water. Consmers will usually get 3-5 quotes - usually the top 3-5 relevant results for their search term. If you are anywhere outside if this bracket, you don't have a functional website, but more of a glorified business card.

This is true... Do a search for "google heatmap". This is a fine example of where you want to be in the search results.
